Today I had the overwhleming desire to make a Fruits Basket vid to the E.L.O. song "Mr. Blue Sky."

Though it's kinda my parent's generation of music, it's a such a funky, cheerful song, with a really good beat. The kind that makes you want to clap. And somehow I think it'd suit the mood and characters of FB pretty well. The Delgados version is pretty fun too (::thanks the kind soul that put that one up for downloading::) but for FB I'm thinking the original works better.

Here's some lyrics for fun:

Electric Light Orchestra, Mr. Blue Sky

Sun is shinin' in the sky,
there ain't a cloud in sight
It's stopped rainin'
Everybody's in a play
and don't you know
it's a beautiful new day. Hey-ey.

Runnin' down the avenue
See how the sun shines brightly
in the city
on the streets where once was pity,
Mr. Blue Sky is living here today. Hey-ey.

Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why,
you had to hide away
for so long, so long
Where did we go wrong?

Hey you with the pretty face,
welcome to the human race
A celebration
Mr. Blue Sky's up there waitin'
and today
is the day we've waited for

Hey there Mr. Blue,
we're so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do,
everybody smiles at you

Mr. Blue you did it right,
but soon comes Mr. Night
Creepin' over,
now his hand is on your shoulder
Never mind I'll remember you this
I'll remember you this way

Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why,
you had to hide away
for so long
Where did we go wrong?
Hey there Mr. Blue [sky]
We're so pleased to be with you [sky]
Look around see what you do, [sky]
well everybody smiles at you

:g: I'm already planning it in my head. Too bad finals are in two weeks and I have reports due and other stuff.

"Hey you with the pretty face," ... could so be Yuki. And Mr. Blue Sky could be Kyou.... "You had to hide away." Mr. Night could be Akito. And the cheerful singer/speaker could be Tohru. Plus there's shots of sunny days and rain too, and stuff. And the weird electronica parts could be Hana. And there could be funny shots of the Prince Yuki fan club.

It'd be cool. And I already have most of the source stuff on CDs.

Damn! Now I'm getting excited.

*Edit: Also, some might be curious to know that this is the song that plays in the trailer for the new Jim Carrey / Kate Winslet movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Is this the song in the new Jim Carrey movie trailer? With the staccato beats?

Yep yep! Is that what stacccato is? I'm deaf to musical vocabulary. But yeah, that's the one in the trailer, original version and all. I want to see that movie.

Tell me, do you have vid maker program suggestion for a beginner? I look to you as a wise and seasoned vidder and I'm putting my poor trusting newbie soul in your hands. Be my Doyle. Guide me to a program with which to begin my journey!

I would say - pick a program you want to stay with. If you think you want to vid and you will vid - then go for a more complicated NonLinear Editing program right away. You will be happier later and less likely to develop bad habits that the slightly easier (but crap programs otherwise) single line editing programs enable.

I can tell you what programs I use and have used: Premiere - which I love even when I curse it. The learning curve is steepish, but not that bad once you figure out the basics (how to get a clip into the timeline).

The other is Windows Movie Maker and while it is intuitive in usage - I hate it. The vids I made on it - I cannot watch now. Which sucks.

What's the full title of Premiere? I'll need that if I want to try it. Which I think I might.

Adobe Premiere. I use version 6.0. 6.5 is more stable and the new Pro version needs a very powerful system to work properly.

*clings to Vegas*

I tried to use Premiere, once upon a time. When it got to the point where it crashed before I even loaded my project file, I gave up ;) Of course, more recent versions are probably more reliable, but I'm used to the quirks of my program now, and am too stubborn to change back.

Could you put Vegas up for me to download? I could get it from the FTP thing, or if you just made a link. But if you're using it from a CD that might be difficult, so if that's the case than nevermind. But it would be cool.

When I first started to use Premiere I was trying to load entire episoded into the clip bin - instead of clipping out what I needed. It was freezing and crashing all over the place.

Premiere can be very finicky about codecs - if it doesn't love the codec you are woirking with it will let you know. So far, my best luck has been with Huffyuv -- which is a lossless codec and loses very little quality in compression. This is because it barely compresses at all and you end up with huge clip files - about 1.5 gigs for a clip that is over 60 seconds. Premiere seems to like it - a lot. Since I bought a 250 gig HD just for vidding recently (upping my system to 350 gigs total) I'm okay with the file sizes. The last vid I did though - the project folder (with clips) was over 100 gigs until I trimmed it (then it was just a manageable 10 gigs that I have to burn to CD).

100 gigs? My two harddrives right now are 4 & 10 gigs. And there's another 10 gig harddrive I have lying around that I haven't added to my comp yet.
Damn. I hope that's enough.

I started with a 20 gig HD - then I added an 80 about 2 months after I started vidding. That worked up and until about 6 months ago when I added the 250 drive.

Good news is that HDs are geting cheaper and cheaper. Also - go internal. External HD is more expensive and slooooooooowww for vidding. Oh - and make sure they are NTFS and have a spin rate of 7200 rpm. I don't know why. I just know that this is good.

I have no idea. It is either that of FAT32. I think. I don't know what it means, but NTFS is better for vidding.

oh. But what _is_ it? Like, a function setting for something? A description of the kind of hard drive? A name for a certain type?

Again I have no idea. I just know that when you have hard drives you have a possibility of NTFS or FAT32 and what that means I could not tell you. Maybe it has something to do with installation?? Type of drives? No clue - but NTFS is better for vidding.
