Long Post Warning

Well, episode 1 of Wolf's Rain aired tonight on the Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" program. And will repeat again later, in the early morning hours.

Overall: THUMBS UP!

Details: Well, it's weird. It's atmospheric. It's very pretty to look at, with slick fight scenes. Its dialogue is good and its characters so far are interesting. It's got decent, creepy/sad music.

I liked the scenes with the street gang. I liked the scenes with the hunter, and the cops interviewing the hunter, and the lone white wolf, Kiba. I loved the scenes of the two wolves together, talking. I liked the wolf fight.

What I didn't love so much was the girl in the tank. I really hope we get an explanation for her. I mean, I've seen plenty enough anime where we get weird shit like girls in tanks because of mythology, and let me tell you that if you don't get an adequate and logical explanation, it can be tiring.
For example; we got a fairly logical explanation of the Plants (aliens in tanks) in Trigun-- they were used to power the cities, to terraform the land, and then there was the whole backstory of the original colonists. While we never really learn much detail about the plants, we learn enough.
Example #2: Blue Seed. I had to wade through HELLA mythology to understand that series, but eventually I did, and when I did I was happy, because the answers were all there.
And now... the bad example: Big O. I watched that whole first season (all there was originally intended to be), and they never once explained the shit with everyone losing their memory and all the weird machinery. That really pissed me off.
Example #4, also bad: Scryed. Their attempts at explaining anything at all was so bad and so inconclusive and so annoyingly nonsensical that I eventually had to stop watching.

I really hope that this moonflower/paradise thing that WR has got going is actually going to go somewhere. I am optimistic that it will. But I am also leery because there's so many ways it could go in a stupid direction.

Voices: Well, it's probably a good thing that I only watched about 8 episodes of the dub of Witch Hunter Robin, because I'm not too attached to Amon's voice belonging to Amon. Here, in WR, he's the silver-haired Leather!Dude. Who is, by the way, my new anime boyfriend. LEATHER!PANTS! And in this instance, LEATHER!EVERYTHING!

The big one I'm going to have to adjust to is the voice of the main white wolf, Kiba, who is played by the same voice as did Vash (my other boyfriend) from Trigun. He also did Sakaki from WHR, but that was after Trigun so I never got into that anyway, still being hung up on Vash. Being as Trigun remains my favorite anime series ever, I'm finding it hard to adjust the same voice to a new character. Especially when he talks about "paradise"-- such a Vash thing. The blond young wolf's voice sounded very familiar, but I couldn't place it. I know I've heard him in another series though.

Ah-ha! www.imdb.com says that he's the voice of Knives! Young Knives, actually. I knew that I knew him from something! Back to Trigun again...poor young!Knives... ::gets pouty and sad:::

Other thoughts for Episode 1: Well, this is kinda interesting so far. A quest story in a a cool setting. Of course, these wolves (mostly the white wolf) seem awfully bloodthirsty in comparison to real-world wolves, which are more likely to kill your pets than to kill you, unless you were to really corner one I suppose. Which would never happen these days anyway unless you live in a few very specific geographical locations in North America.

I have to admit, the idea of wolves changing into humans hits my romantic wolf-loving inner child. There's only been two animals that have fascinated me since I was a wee young'un: whales and wolves. I always had this weird fantasy that I would be walking down the street one day and a wolf would randomly appear out of nowhere and start walking with me, and would follow me home, and no matter what I tried would insist on going with me. And then it would become my psuedo-pet, and it would scare the crap out of people and I would be the epitome of coolness for having a wolf decide to adopt and protect me.

Of course, that particular fantasy was never realized, as most of my make-believe epics weren't. But the idea of turning into a wolf at will was also an attractive one, and having that as a series is cool. I remember they had a vampire tv show for a while where the elite vamps could do that, but it got cancelled. This is cooler than that was, anyway.

All in all, I have great potential to crush on this series. I'm excited by just this first viewing. I hate that I have to wait till next Saturday for episode 2.

Meanwhile... when oh when is Adult Swim going to pick up Naruto? I want Naruto in English like Willow wants magic crack.

First ep was okay, but I need more development.

Me too. But I'm excited nonetheless... I think it's the pretty art. And the wolves. They're my favorite animal... probably because I'm a romantic at heart and wolves are so mysterious and dramatic and everything, and so it's two of my loves meeting: anime+wolveswithcoolattitudes=HappyShaka.

As for Naruto, noooooooooooooo!!!!!!! If it gets picked up, that means all those bittorrents go bye bye because they then become illegal.

Well, yeah, but think of the timeline here. It would take a long time before the English version came out because these things take a long time to make. And what are you complaining about anyway, mister? You read the manga and are spoiled to high hell. IT IS ME WHO WOULD SUFFER TRAGICALLY! ::cries:: Because of course I would be forced to chose between the insane wait till they finally get to dubbing the fourth season... or read the manga and ruin my watching experience. I would have Teh Angst.
