I was telling [livejournal.com profile] jaina that the theme song for The Sopranos would make good icons for Wolfwood and Trigun icons. I thought I'd share the song here, because I've been crushing on it anyway lately, even though I'm not a big Sopranos person.

This AtS Wesley vid I saw to it was kinda cool though.

When I was thinking about this for Trigun my first thought was Vash, but I think the tone of the song is distinctly too bad-ass for Vash. It's more up Wolfwood's morally ambiguous alley.

Alabama 3 - Woke Up This Morning (Right Click)

You woke up this morning
Got yourself a gun,
Your mama always said you'd be
The Chosen One

She said: You're one in a million
You've got to burn to shine,
But you were born under a bad sign,
With a blue moon in your eyes

When you woke up this morning
All that love had gone,
Your Papa never told you
About right and wrong

But you're looking good, baby,
I believe that you're feeling fine, (shame about it),
Born under a bad sign
With a blue moon in your eyes

Woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes
(so sad, goddamn, goddamn shame about it)
Woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes

See ya woke up this morning
The world turned upside down
Thing's ain't been the same
Since the Blues walked into town

But you're one in a million
Cause you've got that shotgun shine, (shame about it),
Born under a bad sign,
With a blue moon in your eyes

Woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes
(so sad, goddamn, goddamn shame about it)
Woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes
Just can't help yourself
Just can't help yourself

When you woke up this morning everything was gone
By half past ten your head was going ding-dong
Ringing like a bell from your head down to your toes
Like a voice telling you there was something you should know
Last night you was flying but today you're so low
Ain't it times like these that make you wonder if you'll ever know
The meaning of things as they appear to the others:
Wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers
Don't you wish you didn't function, don't wish you didn't think
Beyond the next paycheck and the next little drink
Well you do so make up your mind to go on,
'Cos when you woke up this morning everything you had was gone

Woke up this morning,
Woke up this morning,
You wanna be
You wanna be the Chosen One
Yeah you know it
You just can't help yourself

Woke up this morning,
Woke up this morning,
Woke up this morning,
And ya
Got yourself a gun
Got yourself a gun
Got yourself a gun.

What category of music does this fall into? Is this song rap? I mean, it kinda has a rap-like part... but most of the song isn't very rap-like. More like evilly bluesy.

It's like that other song I like, "Appetite (For Dynamite)" by Citizen Cope, or that song "Diamonds and Guns" by the Transplants that was on the radio last year. Sort of sounds like rap or hip hop, but sorta doesn't really. That's something I like. I don't like rap generally, but if it's got an actual rhythm and even better if it has piano, then I can readily enjoy it.

Oddly, two weeks ago, I was picturing a Spike vid to that song.

I saw one. It's up at amv.org. But it's a short version of the song, ripped from the DVD, not the long version played here. Still, it was good.

Blast. Somebody stole my idea. Ah, like I was ever gonna make it anyway. I'll have to check that out. If one ever materializes for Wolfwood, do let me know.

Just checked it out. Woulda been neater with the long version.

Also, I think A3 classify themselves as some form of rock/blues. They have an official site ... right here.

some things I was thinking about if anyone ever made a vid:

Your mama always said you'd be
The Chosen One
[shot of young Wolfwood flashing into older Wolfwood]

When you woke up this morning
All that love had gone,
[something with Milly]
Your Papa never told you
About right and wrong

-

Thing's ain't been the same
Since the Blues walked into town
[picture of Vash walking into town]

Cause you've got that shotgun shine,
[that scene from whichever episode with Wolfwood holding up his Punisher as one-handed shotgun]
(shame about it)
[flash to a young Wolfwood holding a gun]

-

When you woke up this morning everything was gone
[Milly looking at Wolfwood accusingly after he shoots Zazie]

Ain't it times like these that make you wonder if you'll ever know
[Wolfwood sitting out in sunset, smoking]

Wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers
[flash still images of Milly, Knives, Meryl, and Vash]

Don't you wish you didn't function, don't wish you didn't think
[Wolfwood holding head in hands while talking to Milly]

'Cos when you woke up this morning everything you had was gone
[Wolfwood kneeling the church>... or <Wolfwood bleeding and talking to Vash] - You wanna be You wanna be the Chosen One Yeah you know it [image of Wolfwood with big honking cross] You just can't help yourself [a smirky scene] - Woke up this morning, [ ] Woke up this morning, [Wolfwood standing by window shirtless] Woke up this morning, And ya [Wolfwood walking up to face off with Vash, holding up his gun] [continuous shot of the snaps/cover coming off the Cross Punisher, intercut with:] Got yourself a gun [Wolfwood raising gun to camera to shoot Rai-dei] Got yourself a gun [Wolfwood holding gun to his own head, from Escape From Pain ep.] Got yourself a gun. [from the quickdraw ep, Wolfwood pulling out two handguns and raising them to shoot at the camera, quick-freeze on that image of him with two guns out at the paramount beat and go quickly to black for the final notes] ---- and of course, all those opportunities to use "bad sign" with the cross imagery... ::cackle:: If I were to ever vid this (which will never happen for certain as long as my DVD rom keeps rejecting my Trigun DVDs), I would make an effort to show clips from the whole series, not just episode 23. That's the problem I have with a lot of Wolfwood vids, and for that matter a lot of Spike Spiegel character vids. They only focus on the last episodes. When there's a whole season worth of footage to draw from. Annoys me.

Good stuff! This is actually pretty similar to how I outline. I've found it also helpful to mark down the times at each of the stanza's and try to summarize a stanza or a movement in just a couple of words so that I could figure out what the hell I was trying to say in that section.

As for the DVD, does it utterly not work in your computer or is it just being difficult in getting viddable files? If you want I can send you the programs I use...

well, I think I just need a different reading program. It comes out all blocky and staticy when I play it. I think I'm going to try to get PowerDVD off Kazaa or something.

I was also thinking this afternoon (since you got my head back on it) that for this line:

'Cos when you woke up this morning everything you had was gone

I could show that scene of the empty town and then Knives's name written in blood.

ooh..... no, it needs to be more dramatic for that part of the song. but that could be used in another part, definitely!
