Read This Fic
It has very vague spoilers up to the chunnin exams (because of the appearance of Gaara and all the rookie genins, and a big Shikamaru spoiler that was kinda obvious anyway to anyone saw his fight with Temari), but it generally fits any timeline. Because it's a spoof that doesn't really rely on continuity.
But it's one of the funniest freakin' fics I've ever read for any fandom.
Some of my favorite quotes:
“How about we pretend that just for one second that I’m going to actually let you go off and spend Sasuke’s evil brother’s wallet? What do you think he’ll do once he finds out that you spent his money and his frequent buyer’s card?”
“What sort of fruit does Shikamaru’s head most resemble?”
“My evil uncle.”
“Your uncle?”
“Yes, Hinata’s father.” Neji replied.
“Oh, Hinata’s father.” Said Sasuke, nodding his head. “Yeah, and I suppose Hinata’s father is on the same level of evilness as Orochimaru.”
“GOD?!” Lee yelled. “I WAS SHOT BY GOD!!! SAKURA!! I WAS SHOT BY GOD!! GOD SHOT ME!!!”
“I guess we can assume that Lee and Neji are a lot less competent than we originally ORIGINALLY assumed.”
“Frankly, Iruka, I thought you were going to lose it once he shot down your jokes but then I saw you look underneath the underneath and I was all like… man, he has to be in our club.”
So the next person that came to the door was… SHINO’S DAD! And he will be known as Auron. (
You kinda had to have played FFX to get this, but it cracks me up)
“I understand.” Said Shino. “I never tell them anything. I’m more anti-social than Sasuke.”
“No, I am.” Said Sasuke as he tried to be even more anti-social. Sasuke knew he was better than Shino. Even at something so ludicrous of who was more anti-social.
How ... troublesome ...
Date: 2004-06-02 10:48 pm (UTC)This is the damn episode that I can't watch! Everyone seemed to be floored by Shikamaru's performance at the beginning of episode 65, it's driving me crazy: WHAT HAPPENED?!?!?!?!?
Re: How ... troublesome ...
Date: 2004-06-02 11:18 pm (UTC)Or, look at the manga that's out on the net. The manga covers it the exact same... I'm not sure what chapter it is, though.
Basically, Shikamaru is a way way way smartie pants, and he forces Temari into a stand-off through a complex (and SLOW) "battle" of baiting & waiting. Though he technically loses the match because of time-limit, everyone is Oooh-ing and Ahhh-ing over the fact that, if he had back-up (since chunnins lead teams) and it were a real battle not a duel, Temari would be a goner. The judges make many comments about his potential leadership qualities and great patience and control.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Naruto lay the wicked smackdown on Neji. Punk.
Word. I loved it because everyone has now seen Naruto, the loser, totally beat the strongest of the Leaf genins. And he was smart, and controlled, and thorough about it.
Then I felt sorry for him later. Fuckers.
Yeah. This show does that. Sooner or later there isn't any character I don't want to like. (except Hinata cause she's boring.)
One of my very favorite Naruto lines from the climactic strike:
"When I become Hokage, I'll fix the Hyuuga family for you!"
I just went, "Aaaawwwwwwwhhh" and my heart constricted. Naruto's such an honestly good guy, and right then I fully believed he was capable of doing exactly that, because he said it and he meant it. I'm thinking that in Neji, Naruto may have found an ally for life: he made Neji believe in him. That could turn out to be Naruto's power of personality... just like his presence has gradually changed Sasuke for the better too. Not only does Naruto claim that he will be able to do anything, he makes you believe it despite your doubts.

Date: 2004-06-03 11:38 am (UTC)Hinata I like because she reminds me of me. Not that I'm exactly shy but I have almost no confidence in myself in most whatever I do. I relate to that. I know how hard she has it when she doesn't believe she can do anything then the people around her either confirm that or half-heartedly try to make her believe she can do anything. She watched Naruto stumble, fall and get right back up for years and he inspired her to do the same. The Neji/Hinata fight was one of my favorite moments out of this whole series, thusfar. It was one of those situations where you win even though you lose.
That could turn out to be Naruto's power of personality... just like his presence has gradually changed Sasuke for the better too.
Which is why Naruto must DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIE! We can't have him changing the Angsty Kid for the better. Sasuke used to have the market on Angst cornered until Gaara showed up. Shee-sus. Where are the child psychologists when you need'em??

Kidding. Yeah, I watched episode 70 after I came home from work. The super angst fest is about to start, eh? Guess I better make some popcorn and get myself a shot of Prozac.

Date: 2004-06-03 06:12 pm (UTC)After realizing who Shino was in the anime, that cracks my shit up, too. Because, when I saw that kid in the very first episode, I went, "Whoa, I didn't Auron was enrolled in ninja school! Neat."

Date: 2004-06-03 06:17 pm (UTC)I had never even thought about until I saw that line in the fic, just thrown in with no explanation, but I laughed for like a minute and a half, because it was so randomly included, yet I got it and it was one of the funniest jokes of the chapter.

Date: 2004-06-03 06:55 pm (UTC)Episode 82 is the shiznit. It's great. Just a warning. And episode 84 will make you cry and demand that someone call social services already.
And by the way, my Full Metal Alchemist download is at 97%. I haven't turned my computer off in four frickin' days, dude.
The exactly download I got for that is here:

That's how it was with me and my computer while I was DL'ing all of these Naruto episodes. My computer was on non-stop from Thursday morning until Sunday evening. I'm DL'ing eps 1 - 20 right now. I had kinda crummy versions of those. I want a complete set so I can watch this all the time.
There's crack in this anime, I'm tellin' you ...

There is. I know you've watched them in kind of a rush, but do you remember back in the Preliminaries when Kakashi reams out Gai for letting Lee go all fireworks-style postal at the expence of his own health? And then later he takes it back and admits that he'd probably do the same thing.... then he looks right at Naruto. I almost had an epilepsy when I saw that.
check it out....
Date: 2004-06-03 07:12 pm (UTC)I've kept all my reviews of the episodes (I think I've reviewed about 15 overall, more of them later as the eps just get better) in my memories section.
Re: check it out....
Date: 2004-06-03 07:25 pm (UTC)Just finished 76. Poor little kid Gaara. All he ever wanted was a hug. ::wipes away tear:: Too much angst. Cannot cope.
