So I was thinking aobut this gay marriage amendment thingy.

I was thinking about gay marriage in general. Thoughts I've had many times before but are alwasy sparked again by some stupidity I come across.

Far right conservatives always say "people don't realize how gay marriage is going to affect them."

Really. And how is it going to affect me, exactly? (assuming "them" and "me" is the straight person who might or might not get married one day)

Let's take it out of the context of "oh it's such a bad evil sin yadda yadda yadda."

Does it really make a difference to me economically or socially that two people that I never met who are getting married happen to be two men or two women instead of a man and a woman? I mean, really. There's lots of people getting married out there every day that I've never met... the bride could be a man in disguise as a woman and I wouldn't know.

If it doesn't affect me economically, socially, or infringe upon my rights as a person in any way, then we're back to the sin thing.

Since I don't believe in God, Christianity, the Bible, or anything that uses the word "sin" as a catchphrase, that doesn't carry much weight with me either.

Now we're down to simple choice:

A.) two people love each other and want to have the financial benefits that society gives to commitment-minded folk. The state says no and people cry.

B.) two people love each other and want to have the financial benefits that society gives to commitment-minded folk. The state says yes and everyone gets to have high-class cake and champagne.

Comfort a person in a crying fit, or eat a piece of really expensive cake that your host is paying for?

You choose.

Well, gay marriage has been legal *here* almost a year now. And no one's burst into flames yet.

been legal a year now - until next Monday

Assuming Stephen Helmethead wins, expect a return to the Dark Ages shortly, of course. And he gets to name 2 Supreme Court justices almost immediately. And it was Republican appointees on the U.S. Supreme Court that destroyed the U.S., don't forget.

Looking forward in terror to a horrible downward slide, here. Harper is lying like a rug and nobody even cares.

Fuck the Conservatives. I think they had it right when they had the acronym CRAP a while ago. I'm actually torn when it comes to voting, though. I'm not too happy with the Liberals. My heart wants me to vote Green, but I know that's a near-futile effort. I'm actually considering voting NDP, and I'm British Columbian, so that's saying a lot. Gah. Sometimes I wonder if it would be any easier if we had an essentially two-party system like the States.

And here I fondly wish we had a 3-party system instead of a two. Do you know that more people in the US are registered independants than either Democrat or Republican? And there are more Democrats than Republicans. But the Independants represent that fluid middle that both groups are always tryin so hard to snag.

Well, here it's a three, four or five party system, depending on who you ask. Some people include the Greens on the "big" list. And if you're in Quebec, there's the Bloc of course.

Also, I find it disturbing that our elections are *next week* and yet I can find more current information on US elections than Canadian ones. No wonder so many people I know are just apathetic about the whole thing: "Who cares? Whoever's elected will just ignore the us in the west anyway."

with you

Hey, I DO believe in God, Christianity the Bible, and sin, which I define as "things that get between you and God". And here's what I don't believe: that a loving act is going to do that.

Two people lovingly committing themselves to each other for life is a sin? Not hardly.
