I'm finally watching the new Escaflowne DVD #8 that I bought. This is the first time I've rewatched the last episodes in over 2 years, since I initially watched the show. I watched episode 24 this morning and will watch the rest tonight.
Because I haven't had all the emotional lead-in this time of watching the other eps directly before it, Escaflowne is a little less emotional. But then I still have the last two episodes. I admit I almost cried at the very end of the show when I first watched it. I came closer to crying than I did watching the end of Cowboy Bebop or Fruits Basket.
Ahh... I just  Escaflowne. While it ranks about 4th on my heart's favorites, I still put it at the top of my "most well done anime" list.
I love that behind the battles and the mecha and medieval politics and the science fiction... at the heart it's a very carefully built up love story. It's a romance. Esca is one of those animes where I find it hard to accept Van or Hitomi in any other realistic pairing, because the entire series is their love story. They're as made for each other as Mulder & Scully, or John Chricton and Aeryn Sun.
This is how I like my romances. Long, complexly developed, and with lots of explosions and swordfighting. And heck, as if it's any wonder Buffy/Spike is my BtVS pairing. It's no good if you don't have to work like hell for it.

EDIT: I also  the whole
Van < < > > Hitomi < < > > Allen < < Aries & the late sister & Millerna < < Dryden & Cid's father love poly-drangle. Man that must make for tense Christmas reunions.
