I got to watch the 4th Fruits Basket DVD today!
Yes, it has finally landed in my grubby little hands.
And of course I sat back and watched all 6 episodes in one run, in English for the first time.
The last three... ::gets teary-eyed:: ...damn I love this show *so* much. Just so much. It's so fucking good.
I was playing around with the character/actor profiles, and I finally solved a mystery. I know now why Yuki's voice has always stood out to me. It's.... dun dun duuuuuunnnnnnnn.... MiraiTrunks. That's right folks, it's the English voice of Future!Trunks from DBZ. Who was my crush on that show. And who also had purple hair.
Speaking of the actors, I loved the voice actor for Ayame. At first I had to get used to it being deeper than I expected, but now, oh, how I love it.
And I really want that icon floating around on someone on my Flist's journal that says "Ayam eats his soba noodles with confidence."
Akito in English was just as perfectly creepy as I had hoped. And I am definitely adjusted and in love with Kyo's, Yuki's, and Shigure's voices by now. Although Haru is still my favorite casting choice for the dub. But oh, Hiro! He was voiced very well.
I sincerely wanted to smack him. And find his parents and smack them. Which must have meant he was done correctly.

Date: 2004-07-16 03:21 pm (UTC)I adore the English dub. I love everything about the show, period, so I'm ecstatic that the English dub is as awesome as the rest of it. And yes, Ayame's English voice is DA BOMB. He somehow manages to sound drily snarky and completely insane and PURE SEX, all at the same time. Especially the PURE SEX part--I think he could say "Please pass the toast" and make it the dirtiest thing you'd ever heard.

I loved the episode with Ayame's shop, both originally and now again in English. It's hilarious. Prim and proper Yuki... whose older brother owns one of *those* shops. With tacky art on the advertisement card.
I was thinking about what you said about Tohru being like Jesus, and now I can't stop that analogy from popping up whenever I watch. Because she is kinda like Jesus. A slightly spastic Jesus who is a bit batty when it comes to talking to her mother.
....::leaves to answer door::
::runs back clutching box package to chest::
WHEE!!! I have a DVD writer now!

Date: 2004-07-16 06:03 pm (UTC)I just finished watching it! And actually, I liked Shigure's voice best when it was toned down to a normal level... the way he changed his foice to a higher pitch was annoying at times, though I know the Japanese actor did it too. I crack up when I see that guy's picture though on the character/cast profiles. He looks so... I can't define it. Like a semi-cute kind of smarmy. Like he would sound exactly like Shigure's most obnoxious voice sounds. And a little bit gay.
See Christopher Sabat carefully choose his words while expressing his concerns about making Ayame offensive!
That was funny too, and says good about him that he thought of it and worried about it.
Though, I am still adjusting to the idea of Ayame=Vegeta. My brain does not compute, and only goes bad bad BAD places with that.

And a little bit gay.
Amusingly enough, he reminds me very much of the boyfriend of a male friend of mine. Maybe it's the dimple. Yes.

Date: 2004-07-16 11:41 pm (UTC)I watched the whole series in over a week two! I was downloading them in fansubs and I was able to watch the last 4 all in a row. That was months ago; today I finally got the 4th DVD in English. Now I have all but the 3rd DVD, and the whole series fansubbed.
... the last three episodes are brilliant.
The whole show is brilliant, but... but the last three episodes really drive home its brilliantness because you're hit suddenly with what the whole show and all the characters have been subtly leading you too... through the course of the series Tohru has had to face many unpleasant revelations about the Sohmas, unconsciously establishing a pattern until you get to the end where she has to face the biggest and most horrible revelations of all. And it kinda sneaks up on you. ...and yet, when you think about it, the dark underbelly has always been beneath the happy surface, so is it really a surprise?
Which is why I love this show.
That and the fact that everyone needs series hugs. But that's the trouble--- we want to hug them, but we can't! Oh, tis terrible sad.

Date: 2004-07-19 09:32 am (UTC)No, it really isn't in some ways, and yet in others it is. Throughout the show the darkness is eluded to and yet it's so contrasted with Tohru's absurdly unrealistic (and yet thoroughly adorable) optimism that you almost forget that it's there at times until at the end you're just hit with it and I think perhaps you're hit with it harder because of how it effects Tohru.

Word. I don't know how many times I wanted to give every single one of them a hug! Yuki? Kyo!? I'm just like come here you two adorable things I'm going to hug you and if you turn into a cat and rat on me, so be it! Speaking of, at the end where she goes and hugs Kyo and she's all carrying him back in cat form just made me melt.
By the way, I love your background image. Adore it.
