An introduction to Fruits Basket for the benefit of people on my Friends List.
Why? Well, there's these three characters in FB that just don't get any fic. And they need it so badly. I was thinking how great it would be if all the slashers and comedic fic-writers on my flist had seen FB, and would they ever be able to resist Shigure/Aya/Hatori?
I don't know if you know anything about Fruits Basket, but the basic principal of the story is that there's this family that's cursed... 14 of the family members carry the curse at any one time, though the family is larger than that. The curse is that whenever one of the cursed Sohma family members hugs someone of the opposite sex, they temporarily turn into an animal of the Chinese Zodiac. And of course, their personalities tend to reflect the animals they change into.
That's the frilly cute side of FB. The other side is the dark, angsty, unhappy side that comes from the head of the family being cursed to die at a young age (he's kind of a psychopath who abuses the other family members but they all are forced by the curse to obey him), the various members of the curse being disconnected from their non-cursed family members and from each other, and a whole host of angsty issues.
But let's get back to the funny stuff. Shigure/Ayame/Hatori. The trio you people on my Friends List would get a kick out of. They were best friends growing up, but in the timeline of the series they're all 27 now.
Shigure-- a novelist who goes around in a robe all day in his house because he can, and spends an inordinate amount of time playing pranks on his editor. He's got a pervy mind (he writes real novels and porn novels, and oggles women and high school girls but flirts and maybe does more with Ayame) but a great sense of humor, and is rather devious. He has no shame.
He's cursed to turn into the dog.
Ayame-- if Shigure has no shame, then shame is not even a word in Aya's vocabulary. Ayame runs a shop where he makes "fantasy" costumes of nurses, waitresses, pretty much anything the customer wants. He also cross-dresses about half the time. He is more than bisexual, EverythingSexualAsEnthusiasticallyAsPossible. He talks fast and loud and makes up outrageous stories, flirts with everything, and is able to convince people to pretty much anything. He has a level of self-confidence that is positively unnatural. If Ayame had a theme song (he probably does), it would be "Boys and Girls" by Blur.
His cursed form is the snake.
Hatori-- serious, stable, polite. A doctor for the Sohma family. One wonders what he is doing being best friends with the other two, except that he's the only one Ayame ever listens to, and he has an incredibly high level of tolerance.
His cursed form is the dragon/seahorse.
There, now y'all know 3 of my favorite FB characters. I ahve other favorite characters, but right now my brain is on a kick for the blossom trio.

Ah, yep, love those.
Thank you for the fic rec! I'll check it out. And if there's any FB fics you really like, send them my way. The best one I've found so far is Evermore by Zapenstap
Recs!
Date: 2004-07-20 09:40 pm (UTC)As for good Furuba stories... Sadly, I haven't found too many I like, even though I've lowered my standards to accomidate for the smallness of the fandom.
I've found a few humorous stories - Shigure's Secret Homosexual Bondage Dungeon (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1285177/1/), and some (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1326670/1/) cute (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1361124/1/) drabbles (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1481684/1/), all three of which are from "Bad Ideas Gone Wrong Productions".
There's Philos (http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=1637454), a bit of Yuki & Ayame fluff. Some of the charichterizations are a bit iffy at times, but there's a Shigure Ayame Hatori scene I absolutely adore.
And then merrow (http://www.fanfiction.net/profile.php?userid=144527) has a few plotty fics that aren't too bad, although she updates them once in a blue never: Discoveries (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/515854/1/), Spotted! (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/640786/1/), and A Mystery (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/614260/1/). Mostly I like those for the Yuki/Tohru/Kyo semi-text, because they're (one of) my OT3s.

Date: 2004-07-21 12:56 am (UTC)I've been buying the manga myself, so I haven't gotten that far either, though fanfic has spoiled me for a few future plot points.

Date: 2004-07-20 06:32 pm (UTC)All those BtVS/AtS/PotC/LotR smut writers on Flist don't know what they're missing by not having seen anime and thus not knowing about FB. Imagine. People could be writing Ayame/Captain Jack fics! ::flails::
Anyway, I was thinking about harassing

Oh thank you, thank you!
Here, I'll trade your smut for a a really fantastic adventure fic

I wish. I keep hoping Adult Swim will pick it up (though it's not likely because there isn't enough action or guns in it), because then the audience would grow by a lot and thus the fanfic community would grow, which means the small portion of good fic (and oh, it's so small) would be forced to grow along with it.

Date: 2004-07-21 07:39 pm (UTC)Weirdly, though, it can take Shigure/Tohru statutoryrapist-esque blowjobs. which is so not canon.
