Well, the first manga is really bad. I'll loan you my copy as long as you mail it back to me sometime before September. Though, if you were to, say, myseteriously lose it and mail me a used copy of Trigun Volume 2 instead, my heart wouldn't break that much.
If you want to borrow it though, I'm happy to lend it out.
The art is good... VERY sexy color pictures in the front. But the story is just terrible. At least in volume 1; I'm told it really kicks off about 5 volumes in. But in volume one the plot stupid, the action is stupid, the dialogue is cliche, the main characters are perfectly cool and powerful to the point of being uninteresting (there's like FIVE places where they just stand in a group pose and someone says "you're our only hope!"... like 4 or 5 in just the first damn volume), and it seriously insulted me with its portrayal of Bhuddism. And I'm not even close to being a Bhuddist, but it managed to offend me.
To be honest, Sailor Moon and Dragonball Z had more interesting manga than this, and that's not saying much.
And I don't think it's just that I don't understand the mythology behind it... I mean, I watched Blue Seed over and over until I grasped it and read a kagillion websites so I could completely and fully understand the Japanese mythology in that series. Saiyuki inspires nothing of the sort for me.
I'm hoping the anime will be more...well...better.
I haven't started it yet though... I got distracted testing out my FB vol 3 copy. Which works. Heeeheee.
How about a trade? I've got Trigun vol. 2, and I'm willing to lend it to you. We're close enough to each other that it should work out easily.
The animation isn't all that good, but I find it entertaining. The first DVD is pretty light, but the second and third DVDs start to delve into their backgrounds and you start finding out a little bit about what shaped them. And they actually run into enemies that give them some trouble in a fight.
And I'm starting to realize I'm pretty much a sucker for dirty monks/priests. I see a Miroku/Sanzo/Wolfwood icon in my future.
Too bad there isn't something like Netflix for manga.
oh, yeah! I forgot, you live in the Bay Area too. Neato. I'm in sort of the south middle of San Jose. Where are you? Please don't say San Francisco cause I am broke and commuting sucks.
A lending trade sounds delightful. Email me! rashaka_eos@hotmail.com. Probably best if you do it because I'm terrible at follow-up on this sort of thing and will likely forget by morning.
I'm actually getting Saiyuki from Netflix. They also have InuYasha and Witch Hunter Robin. They don't have a lot of older stuff but they seem to be acquiring more recent titles as they come out.
ob btw, referring to both anime and manga. That's what the stances and the weird plotline was all about, it's a spoof of video game storylines and the entire "get a small group of adventurers and save the world, yay!" thing of rpgs.
Hmm...the anime and the manga seem to be pretty close, at least so far, so I don't know if you'll dig it.
Watching dubbed or subbed? I've been catching it on Anime Network, so I've been seeing it dubbed, and I like it. But I have a lust coma thing for Illich Guardiola, so maybe that's it. Whatevuh.

Date: 2004-07-25 12:19 am (UTC)...heh. you're catching the major video game references, yes? That was the only thing I found entertaining about the first vol at all.

Date: 2004-07-25 07:07 pm (UTC)And I absolutely loved the anime from the start.
Of course, as I'm sure that you've noticed, Saiyuki is my crack at the moment. I'm addicted.
