I just ventured into the FMA section of ff.net for the first time (I figured, I'm all caught up on the anime, so it's not like they can spoil me like the Naruto section tried to.)

Dude, what is up with all the Ed/Roy pairings? I don't see it. I mean, I really don't see it. And, ew, can someone say "prison time"? Christ, he's known him since he was twelve.

::sigh:: This is the same reason I can't really enjoy Robin/Amon fanfiction unless it's set a few years down the road, and why I never got into Buffy/Angel or Spawn, and why I hate Kakashi/Sakura or any of the major Harry Potter teacher/student pairings.

But, even so, Roy and Edward? It seems so out of the blue and random to me. I would have pegged all the slashers to go for Roy/Hughes (given that canon heterosexuality is no barrier to most slashers, though I personally only get interested in slash if there is no canon sexuality of characters already given, like Kabuto of Naruto, or if it's deiberately ambiguous, like Trowa and Quatre of GundamWing).

You too, huh? I was rather surprised to see such a large percentage of RoyxEd there, and I don't exactly see the Colonel being interested in a snotty kid with a massive Oedipal complex.

Amusingly enough, there are apparently a fair number of slash writers who dig Roy/Hawkeye, so go fig. (And my favorite interpretation of "Yaoi" is still "YAmete! Oshiri ga Itai!" ("Stop! My butt hurts!")). Heh.

actually, "yaoi" is an acronym, not an original word. But I can't remember what the whole phrase is... it easily could be that.

That is interesting. I like Roy/Hawkeye in a sort of distant way, like I imagine them being like Mulder & Scully: kindred souls who work together for 8 seasons before they get around to the actual having sex part.

At first, I thought the same thing (you can tell that I don't now just by looking at my LJ icon) but I can't really explain why I do like the Roy/Ed pairing so much. I think FMA is one of the few animes that really has broken down a few of the normal pairing barriers that I have.

Such as, as soon as I heard about the Roy/Ed pairing, I was like, "WTF?!?!? HE'S JUST A LITTLE KID!!11!1ONE~!1 OMFGWTFBBQ?!" But then I actually started to read some of the fanfiction. I can't really describe it on why I enjoy it so much. Maybe because most of the smutfics I've read based on them were actually really well written. I think that actually had a large part to do with it. Also, it was the fact that I couldn't really see anyone with anyone else. I mean, there were the few obvious ones, such as Roy/Riza, Ed/Winry, Hughes/Gracia, etc. but none of them really settled well with me. They just didn't click if that makes any sense. But yea... I don't read any of the fanfiction where Ed is younger than 16, though.

I think a large part has to do with the fact that one of my best friends who is 17 is constantly dating people who are 26+. ;[ After a while, you just get used to certain ideas...

Now... With the Elricest thing. I can't tell you how long I resisted it. I really did. I really tried. In fact, I don't normally read incest of any kind (it really bothers me sometimes.. especially the Knives/Vash and Itachi/Sasuke pairings) but something about the Ed/Al pairing just made sense. It wasn't hard to see something like that eventually happening. I mean, they're two brothers who basically only really can rely on eachother in certain situations (no matter who tells them that they can trust them and blah blah blah). It just seems like at first they have a deep affection/respect for one another, and that eventually turns into a type of deeper love. I mean... the best example of that is this one fanfic I read. It has 4 parts to it so far, but man... Even if you don't like Elricest, it's just touching to read it. It also goes into how Ed is taking the fact that he's physically attracted to his brother. I mean, if for nothing else, you have to appreciate how it's written. I would favorite it if it were on FF.net. It might be, I don't know.

Anyway, I will admit, the armor sex thing still creeps me out. I'm still getting used to it, but it's easier to handle reading a doujin than a fanfic for some reason.

Like I said earlier, liking something like those two pairings is just... I dunno. For some reason, I think they're adorable.

That doesn't suprise me... I find almost anything enjoyable on some level if it's well-written. And I suppose it's possible character wise if it's set post-series when Ed is more of an adult and all the stuff that's happening in the series isn't happening anymore, because any pairing can be created given good writing and proper circumstances (fanfic has taught me that much), but I think it's something that would never feel in-character to me. I could probably get over the age thing if I really believed it was in-character.
