I gave into a spoiler tease at fandom_wank and got the most interesting about-face spoiler for Fruits Basket ever.

Seriously. This changes how I see everything in the show/manga. I have to go back and reread everything now and take in this new revelation.

I've avoided most spoilers up to this point, and to be honest I don't think this spoiler is connected to any others so I'm still mostly clean. But, damn. What a spoiler. I'm going to shriek about it in a comment below.

Akito is a woman.

AKITO IS A WOMAN!

A.KI.TO. IS. A. WOMAN.

She has breasts.

Or, maybe Akito is a hermaphrodite. Or maybe he's on funky hormones like Gren from Cowboy Bebop.

BUT OH MY GOD AKITO IS A WOMAN!

Heh.

Thus dies a million and one Hatori/Akito fics. Good riddance.

Actually, I feel even worse for Yuki now. But story-wise, a female-to-male domestic abuse is more unusual in anime/manga/television/comics than male-to-female abuse.

It actually kinda explains some stuff.

Though I suppose Akito/Hatori fic isn't really dead. It's just het now instead of slash.

Ugh. I still don't like that pairing. Maybe pre-Kana, but... not after. I don't think you can forgive that kinda thing. Well, Hatori might forgive her/him, but any smut post-Kana seems non-existant to me, in terms of canonical characterizaion.

Hee! Well, I have suspicion that Hatori/Shigure/Ayame knows about this. Remember that coversation...Volume 4 I think? Shigure reminded Hatori about his dream and how the three of them end up crying together or something. Then he goes and and says that Akito is the most important person in his life and he will do anything to protect it.

I have to tell you, Akito being a woman is but only a part of a bigger revelation...I just wanted to let you know because it's important.

I don't see how they couldn't know, being the oldest and being alive when Akito was born. In fact, I don't know how Yuki, Kagura, Haru, and Momiji couldn't know either, if they lived in the main house and grew up with Akito. I guess if Kyo was constantly outcast then he might not know, and I can see how Hiro and Kisa might not know if it was well-hidden because they are younger, but it sounds to me like the kinda thing that all the main circle would know about.

I don't know though. And don't tell me! My brain is fried enough already. @.@

I was wondering what that dream in volume 4 was about. I have noticed that Shigure in the manga is a bit more...clandestine and vaguely suspicious than Shigure in the anime.

HA HA HA HA IT'S AKITO ISN'T IT HA HA HA HA and actually? It changes very, very little of the series for me. Why (except for some sexist reason) should I think about Akito or the rest of the series any differently? He's always been a Bitch Queen From Hell. Now he just matches the gender.

(I'm going to keep referring to Akito as "he", because I would to be polite to any other transgender person. And again--changes very, very little of anything for me.)

I know... it doesn't really change anything plot-wise. But it kinda changes a lot fandom-wise. And some of my characterization assumptions about Shigure, Hatori, and Ayame might be slightly altered now.

Hey, it occurs to me that maybe the reason this doesn't bug us all that much (my "secret" shame is a completely different issue entirely) is that we see so many girls who are virtually indistinguishable from boys except for breasts on a daily basis anyway. Akito's just another ASC student!

(P.S. Rashaka--my secret shame, which is really no longer secret, is that I never really bought into the whole Akito=bishie thing, but when that spoiler came out, I was suddenly all, "Dude...Akito's kinda hot.")

I never really bought into it either. I always thought "he kinda looks like Yuki"-- where Yuki is the bishie, and Akito is just the comparison.
