Nov. 30th, 2002 09:31 pmFor Buffy or Spuffy fans, I reccomend this essay by Ariana:
The 'Seeing Red' bathroom scene:
Why ME went there, gender relations in the Buffyverse, and the future of Buffy/Spike
It pinpointed & discussed a lot of my personal confusion over the SR scene: like why the hell Spike suddenly became the sexual aggressor in the relationship, and why the hell I'm suddenly seeing the "superman strong" heroine portrayed as a victim helpless against man in a sexual attack. You know, inconsistencies like that. In this nicely thorough essay Ariana proposes theories on what the symbolic/metaphoric/thematic importances of the scene were, and tries to find a way to look at so that it makes sense with the previous canon/characters.
