I rewatched Naruto episode 1 for nostalgia. Some thoughts:

1. I still :heart: Iruka

2. The animation was best in seasons 1 and 2. Stupid production company short-cuts.

3. Shikamaru!

4. I :hear: Naruto. My poor angsty babyninja. We still love you.

5. A lot of people in this village have grey/silver hair. Mizuki. Kabuto (but he was adopted so maybe he doesn't count). Kakashi. Tsunade's lost fiance. Maybe there's a secret clan of grey-haired people in Konoha?

6. The ending animation is the most beautiful ending I've ever seen on an anime series. They could have kept this ending for the entire series and I would have been happy. The water-color look, the monotone shades that keep changing. The butterfly and symbolism! So. Dang. Pretty.

1. Iruka has slowly worked his way up to being one of my favorite characters in the series. He's just...incredibly sweet and funny and good-intentioned, and he loves, loves, loves Naruto. He's the daddy. I love that he's important in the series not because he's the strongest or most badass, but because Naruto loves him and that makes him important. I could not resist uploading two of my favorite Iruka and Naruto scenes from the manga, though I have kept them as nonspoilery as possible:

This one is not spoilery for anything but the Rasengan, and awwwwwwwww. Naruto and his daddy.

This one is a sort-of-flashback from one of the best issues of the most recent storyline in the manga (which is my favorite storyline of the series, and has broken my heart SO MANY TIMES, and if/when they fuck it up in anime I will KEELL DEM), and I *think* it works out of context without giving much away: Part 1 Part 2 Oh my heart. Oh my heart. *starts to cry*

2. I wish the animation for the series were not so often so crappy. The series deserves better, and it makes it (both anime and manga) harder to pimp to people as much as I want to. I'm SO EXCITED about the movie, which looks kickass as well as well-animated. It needs to be fansubbed now now noooow!

4. DITTO. More and more and more every day.

5. Does gray hair signify anything (besides age, obviously) in Japanese culture? I know premature white hair (a la Inuyasha & Sesshomaru) is supposed to mean something's creepy and otherworldly about the wearer, or something to that effect.

6. Ditto. It encompasses what Naruto's story is about so well, and it makes my heart hurt. And it has lots of BLUE! which is my favorite color.
