I just got the best deal on anime EVER.

We had the vendor's fair on campus this week. And today I discovered the anime booth.

For just $84 dollars, I got:

The box set of director Hayao Miyazaki's seven most famous movies, including Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies... the last being one of the 3 in the set that I have not seen yet. I have no idea how much this normally costs.

and

The box set of season 2 of Fushigi Yuugi [The Mysterious Play], which normally costs between $175 and $200. You cannot imagine how long I've wanted this box set! I've been reluctant to fork over 200 for it, after already spending 200 cumulatively in buying season 1 on VHS, way back as a freshman and sophomore in high school. But I got it for $36! It was soooo tempting to fork over another $36 for the entire first season on DVD too, but I already have it on VHS so I took a stand and said "Self, have some restraint."

That's $ 84 total for two brand new, unopened dual-language box sets that would normally have cost me $ 250-300 if I bought them someplace like Suncoast or other movie stores.

And now I have FY season 2 (which I only got to see once 4-5 years ago, and if I remember correctly it might actually still have FMA beat in terms of bodycount), the better of the two FY seasons with the kick-ass finale *and* the first anime episode to ever make me cry, and I have THREE new Hayao Miyazaki movies to watch that I've never seen before.

Plus I saved fucking hella money.*

I am on a high.

* This is, by the way, the proper use of the slang word "hella" which, while sometimes can be used exaggeratingly as a synonym for "very" but MOST OF THE TIME means "many". Got that, Gwen Stephanie? If you actually grew up in Northern California using the word you would. But no. You had to steal it and sell it out to MTV. You bastardized our slang, damn you.

Ooo, Grave of the Fireflies! I saw it recently, and it's fantastic--tragic and sad, but also so poignant. You'll love it.

I hear it makes full grown adults sob like little babies. I've stayed away until now despite two opportunities to watch it... but now I own it, so it must be fate.

Yes they definitely are. Not quite the same legal versions as I've seen before, but definitely legal somewhere. They had all the pretty right-off-the-production-line packaging and stuff. Maybe they're imported from Canada, or something.

Actually, I (and my friends) have always used "hella" for very *and* many. Like, she's hella stupid. I have hella homework tonight. Both.

Hee. I'm debating uses of "hella".

I know. I use it for both two... but the song only uses it the one way. And that makes Shaka cry.

Steel yourself for Grave of the Fireflies. You'll feel very uncomfortable after the end credits roll.

So everyone tells me. But I'm looking forward to it... I figure I'll pic a rainy day when I'm very sad.

Did you know, it's on Roger Ebert's top movies list? I just found that out recently.

Ah, I really want to see 'Grave of the Fireflies'. I've been looking for it around the shops without any luck at all. *sigh* You're so lucky...!

Well this answers my question on if you bought FY, so forget I asked.

You got a great deal on the Miyazaki box set. My friend just got one (but I know his is bootleg from china because it has english and chinese subtitles) and because he had four of them already he gave me Grave of the Fireflies, Castle in the Sky and Kiki's Delivery Service. I already had Spirited Away so now he has two copies of that.

Word of advice the only well dubbed Miyazaki film is Spirited Away! The others are horrible, they add lines and butcher the movies (mainly Castle in the Sky because of Dawson being one of the main voices).

I'm like you, I still haven't watched GoF yet because I know it's so sad, but I think I will tonight. ^^

I adore the dub for Mononoke. I watched Kiki in dubbed on VHS, so I'm looking forward to the comparison later.

Oh! Yes the dub for Mononoke is not bad, I like the original better, but they did a good job with the dub.

Kiki I do not like dubbed, it's like Castle in the Sky to me, they added lines and I think the Japanese voices are much better. Gigi is so cute in Japanese!!!
