((funny how so long after watching it I can still sing along with the theme songs..))
::watching Fushigi Yuugi opening credits for first time in 4ish years::
::remembers why self was so madly addicted to this show 4 years ago despite its flaws::
::TASUKI!::
::reflects that was right--Hakkai of Saiyuki is really just Chichiri -2.5 and more slashy.::
::loves season 2::
::happily sits down to watch episode 27, where, if remember correctly, lots of innocents die and Tamahome goesSuperSayan apeshit::
Edit #1: SUBOSHI! You poor misguided lovesick amoral murderer, I've missed you.
Edit #2: Some background on FY/Mysterious Play for anyone who's never seen it... This show is kinda what you would have if you mixed InuYasha with The Neverending Story and all the politics of LOTR, cranked the body count up past that of FMA, had villains so evil that you hate most of them even the ones with angsty backstories because no angsty backstory is a good enough excuse for the absolutely evil things they do, throw in a heavy dash of sexual themes and undertones, make liberal use of angst, make Shaka cry once, base the whole thing around how much two friends will use their power in an imaginary world to manipulate each other, have way too much romance, have one of the most fascinating subplots in any anime ever, and populate the cast with excessive amounts of bishounen.
Edit #3: And here we are back to the never-ending question... do I loathe Miaka's character, or do I like her? I can never decide.
Edit #4: I still have a crush on Keisuke.
Edit #5: ::visits www.imdb.com :: No way! Miaka is Rem's voice from Trigun? That's just weird that I never noticed that. And... NO WAY! Tasuki / Nakago's voice actor was Vincent in the CB movie? *and* Cowboy Andy? Now I'm really feeling inattentive.
Edit #6: You know, I always thought it would be cool to read a fic that has Tasuki learning more sorcery from Chichiri. Given that we know Tasuki can do simple spells (he did in the beginning, and his fan is operated by a spell unrelated to his seishi power), and that Chichiri of course is apprenticed to the goddess-supreme/creator of the universe of the 4 gods, and the fact that they are the only two left travelling together after the series ends. It would make a lot of sense, especially considering how much more mature Tasuki is by the time the series ends, and when the OAV picks up 2 years later. And it would be cool.

Date: 2004-10-08 10:44 pm (UTC)It's hard for me to watch the second season for a few reason mainly my Nuriko... *cries and pets poor Nuriko* How I love him so.
so did you buy it?
Nuriko is still one of my most favorite anime characters for his sheer cool factor.
Date: 2004-10-08 11:00 pm (UTC)Episode 33 was the first time anime ever made me cry. It's only happened for 2 other shows since then, too.

Date: 2004-10-08 11:09 pm (UTC)It is full of a very loveable set of characters, almost all of which get a lot of character development, which played a lot into my addiction, I'm sure. It's two seasons total, plus 3 OAV sets. The OAVs are crap though-- the end of the show is very strong and the story is best when ended there.

Date: 2004-10-08 11:17 pm (UTC)I know exactly how that feels. That's me and Alias. It's most definitely not the best show ever but it's crack-ish in that way.
I'll definitely check it out. Gotta finish up FMA (which I posted about again last night) as well as watch Gunslinger Girl then read the rest of Battle Royale (that's so sick, I can't turn away).

Date: 2004-10-08 11:32 pm (UTC)OVA1 is a waste, except for the omake- comedic shorts at the end of the OVAs. The story in OVA is not cannon and is a horrid muddled mess that is best forgotten. OVA3 isn't bad, I, again, liked the maturity of Taka and Miaka, and Keisuke, my heart just went out for the poor guy... The only problem with OVA2 is it should have been longer than 6 parts, it's a bit rushed in parts that it shouldn't be, if it had been 9 parts I think they could have done full justice to the storyline.
I like almost all of Yuu Watase's manga. Her stories, even when they are lighter, such as Imadoki and Appare Jipangu, have a depth to them, both in characterization and plot. A theme running through Watase's manga stories is: taking responsibility for one's actions and the consequences of not doing so. She does this without getting a moralizing tone. (And hoo boy sometimes those consequences are very bad...)
