I've decide that shipping Edward Elric of FMA is, for me, rather like shipping Methos of HL. Both characters are hot and cool and smart and worthy of having someone awesome to ship them with... but unfortunately on neither of their respective shows is there anyone that I think they actually romantically belong with or would make a believable and fun pairing with, het or slash.

I could go for Winry/Ed for its cute factor and because of all the characters on the show she's the most likely, but I am somewhat leery of that ship because I see it leading toward a repetition of Trisha/Elric and the last thing Ed wants, I think, is to become his father on the subject of homelife.

Similarly I could go for Methos/Duncan, but the fact is I like Amanda with Duncan so much better, and unlike my views on Spike/Angel pre-series slash, I actually think Methos and Duncan are more interesting as friends than as lovers.

Unfortunately, that leaves Methos, my favorite HL character, out in the cold on his pretty pretty ass with no one for me to ship him with except OCs. Ick.

And for Edward, it also leaves him without someone to ship him with and me unable to write romance drabbles for him.

::sigh::

Oh well. I have Hawkeye/Roy. They can be my FMA ship. And I've never really read that much HL fic that wasn't a crossover anyway.

I've read a few good Ed/Winry fics that weren't OOC and made the idea of some sort of romantic relationship between them believable. He IS a hard character to 'ship with anyone even, like you said, with the most likely person in the series.

I guess it's all in what you're expecting from a story. The ones I've read were all three or four page long one-shots. I don't read "romance fics" that span many chapters, because I'm simply not interested in that sort of character interaction for more than a few pages. That goes for all fandoms, even ones where I have 'ships that I love (i.e. Spike/Faye).

I love romance fics. I can't get enough of them. But I love non-romance fics too. Actually some fandoms I wish people would write more non-romance fics because there isn't enough.

Ed/Winry is a hard ship to write (I´ve tried recently and failed miserably). Ed is hard to write. Teenagers are hard to write. Teenage love, though very tempting in its cute ankwardness, is a pain in the ass to write. I´ve not read that much of that pairing but I haven´t found anything that satisfies me yet (but I am a VERY picky fanfic reader) and it´s a shame. I think the pairing has possibilities.

Well, that´s always (very) good to hear.
