A ficlet. Small, but it's what came out of my brain tonight.
jaina, I swear I sat down to write Vash/Meryl for you. Maybe next time?
Sountrack to the ficlet: "Boom Boom Ba" by Metisse (from the Dead Like Me soundtrack)
Spoilers: set post episode 23, possibly post-series
Memoria
Sometimes Meryl dreamed of Wolfwood. She dreamed of his laughter, and his 3 o'clock shadow, and his obnoxious miniature confessional. She dreamed of the way he gazed at Milly when Milly wasn't looking (and sometimes when she was), the way he coached a smile out of Vash, the way he made hardships seem easier somehow.
Of course, there'd been moments when she'd hated him--stupid, irrational reaction to some tiny grievence. But it wasn't stupid or small, because he was stealing her best friend with his smiles and he was stealing Vash with his secrets.
They're not mine, she would tell herself. Milly is her own woman and the very idea that someone could own Vash the Stampede... it was stupid and she knew it. And when she wasn't busy worrying about where they'd find shelter that night or how they'd pay for the next bus across the desert, Meryl quite enjoyed spending time with Nicholas D. Wolfwood. He was clever, he was funny, and he was a cynic after her own soul. Truly she couldn't hate him-- for there were also moments when he laughed, and Meryl loved him for it. It was a good laugh, a laugh made for fathers and uncles and lovers. As a woman Meryl admired that laugh, and as a friend she appreciated it.
She wondered if it was bizarre that these were the things she remembered about him. Here lies Nicholas, who was a killer and a traitor, but who also drank whiskey and laughed like a king and loved children and loved Milly Thompson.
Here lies Nicholas, her friend.

Date: 2004-11-01 11:06 am (UTC)...that's kind of why I've put off watching the rest of the series, I guess. *g* Because I love him, love him, love him. (I don't know how or when or why he dies or if anyone else does, though, so DON'T TELL ME. *G*)
I'm taking my "Bebop" and "Trigun" DVD sets home with me over Christmas break, and I'm going to go through the entire series of both if I can. I am looking forward to getting through the "Trigun" anime so I can start on the manga, in which I am told Wolfwood LIVES, and I love the manga for that by default whether it sucks or not.
You might put this entry behind a cut-tag, though, if you haven't already--depending on how she felt about the first ep, I might try to get

Date: 2004-11-01 01:05 pm (UTC)I can understand that. Wolfwood is my favorite Trigun character, my original anime manwhore. I have a chibi!Wolfwood flat rubber keychain thingy hanging from my rear view mirror. :)
(I don't know how or when or why he dies or if anyone else does, though, so DON'T TELL ME. *G*)
I won't tell you, I promise. It's very good-- the last DVD is the best one. And oh... oh my, the angst. Trigun was my "angstiest anime ever" before FMA, you know. And I usually tell people who like Trigun that odds are good they'd like FMA. Initially FMA reminded me of Trigun in its storytelling style (though I think in the end it surpassed Trigun).
Still, if you've only watched the first half... wow. Are you in for a ride. Just remember: in the end, everything, everything is about Vash. That's what's so beautiful about this series: it never loses story-focus. Even if you don't pick up on all the foreshadowing the first time (I didn't), by the end you will get it. This show is so bloody thorough in its character development and plot.
Actually, another thing I liked about Trigun that I also liked about Bebop and Lupin III and that, to an extent, I like about SC is that the main characters are adults, not teenagers. (in the era of SChamploo, they *are* considered adults) It gets repetitive if every series out there is about teenagers, especially teens acting like adults. While I love shows like IY, sometimes it's also nice to watch shows about people who are older and react differently.
I also like shows like FMA, Blueseed, and Naruto where there is a mix of child/teen and adult characters, but the kids/teens act like kids/teens and the adults act like adults and you're not stuck wondering why kids are put in these unrealistic situations no kid would ever be put in and treated as equals to adults. In Naruto and FMA, though kids are put in positions/roles normally occupied by adults, the fact that they are young never really leaves the minds of the adult characters surrounding them or of the audience.
I know that's kind of long, but I wanted to vent. Sometimes, you know, its nice to have characters to write/read fic about where you don't have to worry if they're legal or not.
