timepiececlockI just got called a "newbie" on the adult swim board. For some reason, this is really cracking me up.

See, I've lurked around the AS messageboard for about a year now, but I really only go into threads about series that I like, and I don't talk all that often, so my post count is only like a hundred forty-something. But best as I can figure, being called a "newbie" is the height of insultdom in ASmessageboard-verse. (side bar: I personally could care less about being known as a newbie even in those times when I am new, because I don't advertise myself as such, and frequently I have great disdain for that labelling system as a whole-- who cares if someone is new to a fandom or not? Most people could be new and you'd never no it anyway so the distinction is pointless. Also, don't waste my time with pointless shit if it's not funny. /end side bar) It never actually happened to me when I *was* new though, so it's kinda cracking me up.
Although I admit there's a small amount of indignation, cause someone said "you tell that newbie!" to someone else who had been debating me on the somewhat finer points of why the Sin characters are called what they are called in FMA, congratulating him on his winning arguement. I don't have a problem with the name-calling, but with the assumption that he "told" me. I *won* that arguement. He lost, I won, cause I had the better argument and(though of course this isn't as important) I got the last word. Why does he get congratulations?
It's not right. I won that one dammit. It was a clear victory for Team Shaka Who Has Better Sentence Structure and Grammar and More Sound Reasoning Than The Rest Of You, You 10-15-Year-Olds.
::sigh:: I have a stupid fandom. It's sad but true. I really hope that once the people who watch Full Metal Alchemist on Cartoon Network actually start writing fanfiction, we don't get all the stupid people there too. I'm hoping for more the CB fandom range-- a lot of badfic but also a considerable amount of good fic mixed in between. I don't want FMA to turn into another Fruits Basket fandom, where the greatest mystery on the internet is how such an intelligent series has the stupidest fanfiction writers I have *ever* come across (EVER, in all television, film, book, or anime fandoms), on a 134:1 basis, approximately.

Date: 2004-11-16 12:50 am (UTC)I tend to stay away from large anime boards/LJcomms/forums though, as a general rule. Because anime messagebaords are often stupider and more embarrassing than, for example, television fans or movie messageboards. I don't know if its the greater preponderance of young people, or what. But it's just something I've noticed. The only one I really go to is AS, and mostly because they've been talking about FMA for the last few months. But overall I find large anime boards to be very impersonal-- and the best conversations happen in setting where people speak freely and often and aren't afraid of getting mobbed by masses.

Date: 2004-11-17 12:38 am (UTC)I don't know if its cause I'm getting older or what but I can't find it to be fun anymore. I'll watch the anime but I can't put my whole foot into the water. I like FMA, but I'm happy with the het comm's & het pair comm's I'm on, thats as far as I'm going with that.
Most of my favorite anime-fandom LJ comms are small and don't get a lot of traffic, unfortunately. While its good that they're not stupid... it's bad cause they often die young.
True. You have some series that some might have watched but didn't have enough for a following. For instance, I'm a Gungrave fan, one series I will indulge regarding fandom (as long as it doesn't piss me off). Gungrave is like an "underground" title all around whether it be the PS2 game or the anime, though you'd think since it was created by the guy who created Trigun, more ppl would flock to it, but its not the case. My reaction, I'm soooo fine with that. The less of a HUGE fandom, the better. I made a Gungrave community and for awhile I only had like 20 or so ppl join and it would seem as if I was the only one posting with few comments on anything. Now I'm up to 50 members and its still kinda quiet with a few posting here and there and me still posting the most, I guess cause I devote my time to it. There isn't much out there to talk about, sure the dvds are now coming out (the series has been long finished since April) and a new PS2 game for the series came out but thats about it, no manga to go with it either. So eventually, once all the dvds are out and its not really "new" to ppl anymore, the community will probably be silent for a good bit of time. As much as I don't want that to happen but I know it will.

So true and I noticed that in my community as well and thats how I like to see it. No arguing about pairings, hatred (and I mean deep hatred) for characters, being general asshats, etc only cause those are my rules. No fighting what so ever, especially over stupid shit. I may sound as if I rule it with an iron fist but hell, if it keeps it on peaceful grounds, why not?
As for the other comment about being a noob on boards and such, I always hated how ppl would diss them so hard. Sure noobs irk me only if they act like a retard but if they are genuine in their curiousness, then thats fine. I have noobs finally come out of the woodwork on my community cause they just now finally got the chance to see the whole series or play the game. No one there who knew about the series or game when it first came out dog ppl out cause they are stupid and are noobs. Plus with noobs that are stupid, they actually ask decent questions, bring topics up that make others think of things we didn't notice ourselves.
And sorry for such a long comment, I've been meaning to reply to this when I saw it.

I used to love GW. I read and wrote a lot of fanfic (and collected quite a bit of junk from conventions!), but I was not involved in any kind of community or discussion or any other aspect of the fandom beyond ff.net and some other fanfiction websites, so I can't really comment on what it was like. I just remember a lot of people seemed to passionately hate Relena for reasons that I didn't understand and actually made me question if they had even understood what they were watching and the purpose of her character.

Generally the larger a fandom is, the better it is, in my mind. It means more of everything, including the good. And I've never really agreed that "smaller is better" or that things lose their coolness once you share them with the world. I *want* everyone to like the things I like, love the shows I love. Cause then they write more fic and I get stuff to read. Since I am a fanfic addict, a larger fandom ultimately means more fanfic and proportionally more good fanfic. And I've found most fandoms have a good balance between good and bad fanfic. Fruits Basket is unfortunately (and puzzlingly) the exception to that-- and I'm desperately hoping that FMA doesn't end up the same way. I'd much rather FMA ended up the way CB or Trigun fandoms have gone-- large fanbase, and the good with the bad in a tolerable, even enjoyable ratio.
Because for the most part I get impatient with anime discussion boards/forums/communities, I limit that part of my fandom activity to my flist and a few small communities devoted to a particular show or pairing. My main complaint with anime fans though generally comes from multi-fandom messageboards, such as Adult Swim and others. Because people are fans of different things they are so disconnected, and that means it's not fun or open-minded, and people rarely want to devote the time or energy to long, thought-out discussions that go into extreme detail.
I've heard good and bad about Gungrave. I tried to watch the first episode but got bored and quit. I might come back to it at some point; I haven't forsworn it or anything.

Man I hate that spelling. It's a phonetic mispelling that isn't even phonetically correct. Difference between "ew" and "oo". ::shudder::

I guess I meant more along the lines that its easier to somewhat "control" the asshats in the smaller area than say if it got way out of hand regarding the fans in a bigger area. Like I said, maybe I'm just getting too "old" to be babysitting ppl that should know how to act their age. I'm just tired of the drama bullshit that fandom doesn't need. Hell, if I want drama, I'll just keep to stuff that goes on in RL.

True, cause regarding Gungrave for me is a good series but I'm still shocked that not many have given it a try or even watched it and admit that they seen it. And I'd like more ppl TO see it and it is shown on tv if you have TechTv on your cable channel since they have it on the Anime Unleashed block.
Though the other problem I ran into recently regarding someone's comment about "good fics" is this that irked me. Course this was in regards to Gungrave. A fan who will read anything but het, had the nerve to say that there were no "GOOD" fics out there for the series which is bullshit. Sure, its not a known fandom and not many write for it (which I still don't see it as being a big fandom anytime soon) but for a few of us who are decent writers, makes us sound like we write garbage. She was basing on what she found on ffnet which isn't much and a few fics I will admit aren't that good. But its still the idea of basing EVERYONE's fic as shit cause no one writes shouen-ai or yaoi for the pairing she wants. And she doesn't want to read the het that is written since its in the series *rollseyes*. Thats what pisses me off. And I don't see many others making the effort I've been making on writing for the series so what gives ya know?
For FMA, I'm not a fan of yaoi first off, so to me of what I see, the majority I noticed is the take over of RoyEd and thats not saying much on having a good bit to choose from. And the ones that automatically jump on the RoyEd bandwagon without THINKING for themselves instead of what is "hot" and what their friends want. Which is why I stay away from the big groups regarding that fandom.
I can't IMAGINE the splooge on the AS board, sounds scary. I seen boards like that a long time ago and it was scary then too.
The thing I have to tell ppl about Gungrave is this. Either avoid watching eps.1 or watch it and continue on. Eps.1 is just a build up for what is to come in the future. Eps.2 on up shows you the past regarding the lives of the characters that will have an important role. To me, I really don't know WHY they did that for eps.1, if they didn't make that eps of what they shown, it wouldn't have hurt the series at all. I think thats what turns ppl off is the 1st eps and thats sad cause you miss out on a whole lot more. And its TOTALLY different than Trigun so I hope that ppl don't expect it to be like it. You should give it another chance when you get the time, just avoid #1. Its also pretty angsty too so I'll give ya a heads up on that, plus it deals with the Mafia so expect ALOT of killing.
I agree about the word noob, though I catch myself using it from time to time. Kinda goes up there with other words that ppl act like they don't know how to spell as in smex, ded, prOn, teh, etc. It gets old real quick and I think makes the person look unintelligent.

Date: 2004-11-17 10:39 am (UTC)I know what you mean. It's trendy right now on ff.net to do yaoi pairings, and Roy/Ed automatically got adopted as the posterchild of yoai fans of FMA. When I first noticed this I was totally shocked because, wow, can we say out of character and out of nowhere? I expected people would drift more toward Roy/Hughes or Roy/Havoc or Ed/Russell, and while I've seen some of the former two, I've seen none of the latter.
I like most of the Roy/Hughes I've read (mostly if it's pre-series or current but one-sided), but even before Roy/Hawkeye became canon I didn't see how Roy/Ed fics were based on anything more than air. Also, it messes with the extremely well-developed replacementfather/angryson dynamic they have that lasts all the way up until episode 49.
