timepiececlock: (Hughes sleepy)

Well, I knew it was too good to be true that I loved all the voices up until this point.

Huhges. Hughes, Hughes, Hughes. ::sigh::

I wonder if even possible to find voice in English that would satisfy me, that could ever compare to my expectations. I mean, this guy isn't bad per se. But he's not Hughes either. It's the, I dunno, the exuberance? He's not as up & down wildly varying in tone. And he's not that mix of irritating v. sexy. And he's not as funny. Hughes is funny. And he doesn't have that slight edge of confident drawl (I know, I know-- how can little white-American me even recognize a drawl in a Japanese voice? I dunno, but I think Hughes has one.)

I am a little disappointed. Thankfully not N. G. Eva dub kind of disappointed, not that, but I'm not exactly as pleased and in love as I now am with Al & Roy & & Lust & Pinako's English voices. Weirdly, actually, this episode as a whole didn't seem as funny as the Japanese version was.

Hawkeye's voice kicked ass though. Really kicked ass. Aaahhh... her and Roy's voices are gonna be so perfect. I'm getting more and more fond of Roy's voice with every episode. His laugh over the phone in this ep was perfect-- almost an exact duplicate of the Japanese. Which means that while his voice is of a different sort, it works and matches in its own way.

I forgot that we could see 2nd Lt. Havoc in this episode, though he doesn't say anything. Heee. Havoc.

EDIT: Okay, I've thought about it and I know what was wrong. English!Hughes's normal conversational voice is fine but his family-bragging voice was off. It wasn't high-pitched enough, drunk-sounding enough, or wacky enough. That had better be fixed pronto. The whole reason Hughes is so lovable is cause of his two different voices and how goofy it is.

Ahh, they screwed up Hughes! I'm so disappointed to hear it, but not entirely surprised. His voice is the Japanese is just so perfect, it would have been extremely difficult to get anyone to match that in English, imo.

It's like what Ed says in the end of episode 3, how there's probably nothing in this world of equal value to their mother's soul. Likewise there's no English voice in this world that's a perfect horizontal match for Hughes's original voice.

I'm hopeful that this new voice will grow on me, like Ed's has, once I get over the jarring feeling of how different it is.

But it's hard, you know? I mean, they picked the perfect kid for Al so there is no jarring feeling-- the transition is perfect and I barely even notice I'm listening to him in English now instead of Japanese. The same thing with Lust and Hawkeye. So it can be done for some</i. characters, finding that right match. I guess Hughes is just irreplaceable.

Funny you should mention this. I thought of something last night as I watched GITS SAC as I gritted my teeth over Crispin Freeman and Togusa for the 500th time. Don't look at the English VA characters as the Japanese VAs have interpreted them. Look at them as fresh interpretationss of the same characters. Maybe you will have an easier time of it.

Remember, the Japanese Spike was really good, but our Spike was sexy - According to Yoko Kanno anyway.

I've tried that before. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't.

I didn't know she said that. He did have a sexy voice though.

whoa! Yoko Kanno!

that's pretty cool.

and it's true. they are two separate performances and two totally different beasts, the Japanese (with subs) and the English.

Someday I'll watch it subtitled in Japanese. Though it's hard to think of Spike not having a sexy voice.

Kouichi Yamadera is amazing. You should definitely watch the subs. I think he's plenty sexy. He just captures Spike's light but tragic irony better.

Still, both performances are very good. Just totally different.

I'm reserving judgement of Hughes' VA until the big test ... an "OMGmydaughteristhecutestthingEVA!" moment.
