Well, I knew it was too good to be true that I loved all the voices up until this point.
Huhges. Hughes, Hughes, Hughes. ::sigh::
I wonder if even possible to find voice in English that would satisfy me, that could ever compare to my expectations. I mean, this guy isn't bad per se. But he's not Hughes either. It's the, I dunno, the exuberance? He's not as up & down wildly varying in tone. And he's not that mix of irritating v. sexy. And he's not as funny. Hughes is funny. And he doesn't have that slight edge of confident drawl (I know, I know-- how can little white-American me even recognize a drawl in a Japanese voice? I dunno, but I think Hughes has one.)
I am a little disappointed. Thankfully not N. G. Eva dub kind of disappointed, not that, but I'm not exactly as pleased and in love as I now am with Al & Roy & & Lust & Pinako's English voices. Weirdly, actually, this episode as a whole didn't seem as funny as the Japanese version was.
Hawkeye's voice kicked ass though. Really kicked ass. Aaahhh... her and Roy's voices are gonna be so perfect. I'm getting more and more fond of Roy's voice with every episode. His laugh over the phone in this ep was perfect-- almost an exact duplicate of the Japanese. Which means that while his voice is of a different sort, it works and matches in its own way.
I forgot that we could see 2nd Lt. Havoc in this episode, though he doesn't say anything. Heee. Havoc.
EDIT: Okay, I've thought about it and I know what was wrong. English!Hughes's normal conversational voice is fine but his family-bragging voice was off. It wasn't high-pitched enough, drunk-sounding enough, or wacky enough. That had better be fixed pronto. The whole reason Hughes is so lovable is cause of his two different voices and how goofy it is.

Date: 2004-12-05 03:45 am (UTC)I'm hopeful that this new voice will grow on me, like Ed's has, once I get over the jarring feeling of how different it is.
But it's hard, you know? I mean, they picked the perfect kid for Al so there is no jarring feeling-- the transition is perfect and I barely even notice I'm listening to him in English now instead of Japanese. The same thing with Lust and Hawkeye. So it can be done for some</i. characters, finding that right match. I guess Hughes is just irreplaceable.

I didn't know she said that. :grin: He did have a sexy voice though.
