I think I've figured out the secret to enjoying Samurai Champloo.

I just stop expecting it to have a plot or a purpose or anything useful like that, and instead simply settle down and enjoy its enthusiasm. It may not be going anywhere fast or anywhere interesting, but it's easy on the eyes and sometimes makes me smile.

ETA: I don't mean it doesn't have a plot the way FLCL seems to not have a plot. FLCL has a plot, it's just very buried and very convoluted and very wound up in metaphor. In contrast, SC seems to be all "Well, we like the idea of a plot. In theory that sounds cool. But, meh, in practice it just seems too troublesome to bother even trying."

Screw the MacGuffin reason for the quest. It's all about the journey, man.

*loves my funky little cheerfully anachronistic romp so hard*

'cheerfully anachronistic' is a good description.

Actually, this is one of my favorite of the episodes. MAbye because it makes me happy that Mugen, when being taught to read, then becomes a word-lover and avid reader. Which you just would't associate with his personality, but matches my world philosophy that EVERYONE is a reading lover deep down, some just haven't found the right kind of book yet.

That instructor was so very Gai, wasn't he? And I was right there with him on freaking out about the taggers-- not cause they were tagging, but because they were mispelling stuff. I have that reaction often.

You think Mugen becomes a word-lover? I think that learning to read gives him a whole new way to be obnoxious, which is Mugen's purpose in life (aside from looking for trouble.) Labeling everything of Fuu and Jin's is revenge for them picking on him.

In the context of just this episode and his temporary enthusiasm, yes.

I think that learning to read gives him a whole new way to be obnoxious,

Sounds like good reason to be enthusiastic. :)
