I've decided that I need to make a Cowboy Bebop soundtrack, with a song for every character. However, even stratching it out, that's about 9-10 major characters. So I added places/locations, because in this show places like the ship and Mars and Earth are almost characters unto themselves.

Overall Theme: Bittersweet Symphony, by The Verve
(http://www.azlyrics.us/275710)
This song is all about bitterweet life. That's what CB is all about too. It includes many types of people, and connects them all together by the shared crappy bittersweetness of life. This song always makes me think of the series, and all the people, as a whole.
The people:
Spike - Promise, by Eve 6
(http://www.azlyrics.us/87304)
This has been my Spike for forever now. Wanting to put it on a CD and stick a "Spike Spiegel" label on this song is half the reason for my starting this CD.
Jet - Cast No Shadow, by Oasis
(http://www.lyricsfreak.com/o/oasis/102302.html)
I was trying to think of songs for Jet-- he was the hardest. As a last resort I was scannign my CD shelf in desperation, and I saw the Oasis CD edge, and this song popped into my head, even though it's never been a particular gaga favorite of mine. It fits nicely here though.
Faye - All That Jazz, by Katherine Zeta Jones
(http://www.lyricsbase.com/m/matchbox20/bright-lights.html)
Cause this is Faye, in all her glory. She is no man's wife, but oh, she loves her life. Well, until the end, but then *everyone* is depressed by then... plus it's classic and that touches nicely with Faye's character.
Ed - Maxwell's Silver Hammer, by The Beatles
(http://www.lyricsdepot.com/the-beatles/maxwells-silver-hammer.html)
This was so hard to decide. I finally settled on the best song ever written for a crazy kid.
Julia - Bang Bang, by Nancy Sinatra
(http://www.lyricsfreak.com/c/cher/29591.html)
This is the cover version from the Kill Bill vol.1 soundtrack. The melancholy tune in this rendition is good for Julia whenever she appears, and for what she means to Spike-- it manages to capture the sadness of her little corner of the Bebop story. Plus, the words to this song are so poignant it's almost funny.
Vicious - Tom McRae - Kareoke Soul
(http://susanward.w.interia.pl/videos/karaoke.html)
This song reminds me of Vicious more musically than it does lyrically, though lyrically it's creepy too.
The Syndicates - Sunday Bloody Sunday, by U2
(http://www.azlyrics.us/270351)
Cause life in a Syndicate is crappy, full of Big Pain and then Bloody Death.
Vincent (movie) - The World I Know, by Collective Soul
(http://www.lyricsbox.com/cgi-exe/am.cgi)
Originally I was thinking something else, but this just seemed more right, to me.
Elektra (movie) If You Could Only See - by Tonic
(http://www.azlyrics.us/265210)
Elektra's cool. She's action girl. This is an action song, though she's in the role of the male speaker here, instead of the female character of the song. And poor her and Vincent...the world doesn't understand them...
The places:
The Bebop - The Old Apartment, by Barenaked Ladies
(http://www.azlyrics.us/23479)
It fits. It just fits. That blend of nostalgia, good and bad. That underlying anger, that bitterness, those fun times, and then the strange separateness from everything. "Broken glass, broke and hungry, broken hearts and broken bones."
Earth - Bad Moon Rising, by Creedence Clearwater Revival
(http://www.lyricsfreak.com/c/creedence-clearwater-revival/34328.html)
It just seemed right, especially given that Hard Luck Woman, which occurs on earth, is so near the conclusion of the show. Plus it kinda fits with the show on the whole and the characters' propensity for getting into trouble.
Venus - Bright Lights, by Matchbox Twenty
(http://www.lyricsbase.com/m/matchbox20/bright-lights.html)
I heard this in the car this morning, and it made me think about all the broody people on CB, and then about the sadness in the episode Waltz For Venus.
Mars - One Night In Bangkok, by Murray Head
(http://www.lyricsbox.com/a-teens-lyrics-one-night-in-bangkok-ck34c58.html)
Cause Mars is sleezy and gritty and violent and underworldish, with a glitzy oily shine.
Ganymede - Nautical Wheelers, by Jimmy Buffett
(http://www.seeklyrics.com/lyrics/Jimmy-Buffett/Nautical-Wheelers.html)
An unusual song compared to the rest, but so good for this.
Jupiter - One Headlight, by The Wallflowers
(http://www.azlyrics.us/277810)
I was first going to put this to Faye, then I realized it goes for Faye, Spike, Gren, and everyone while they're on Jupiter...
And lastly....:
The Past Greenbird, by Yoko Kanno, Cowboy Bebop OST
Too pretty not to be included... plus this song goes hip to hip with "Blue".
Spike: Reprise - Carry That Weight, by The Beatles
(http://www.oldielyrics.com/lyrics/the_beatles/carry_that_weight.html)
It would be criminal to make a CB mix and not include this song. It is, after all, the last thing we see as the finale episode closes.
Finale - Blue, by Yoko Kanno and The Seatbelts from the Cowboy Bebop OST
(http://www.animelyrics.com/anime/cbebop/cbblue.htm)
Because this song is absolutely perfect for the show and I wouldn't dream of leaving it out. Plus it kind of ties everything together, and reminds you that this is a CB soundtrack, instead of a random collection.
