Constantine
Feb. 18th, 2005 03:20 pmWhew! Just got back from a matinee showing of Constantine.
My vote? I liked it.
Surprisingly, I was very entertained.
However, I acknowledge that this isn't the kind of movie that will entertain everybody. It's very dark and gloomy visually-- a lot like how Se7en was dark all the time. And it's very monster-gorey. lots of gore of monsters, not as much human gore. Definitely a bit squicky in a few places... the way the first Mummy movie was kinda squicky.
The photography style was interesting; very unusual composition of the frame in some scenes; probably inedned to look like comic book style. I noticed it more in the beginning than in the end.
Keanu Reeves was hot. So was Gavin Rossdale, although if I was supposed to find his character scary, I didn't. Rachel Weiz was pretty, as she usually is, and I liked her character well too.
I'm glad he didn't die! Although, I think taking out his cancer and forcing him to live was remarkably short-sighted of the devil. Because while it probably ensures that Constantine WILL do something else to get himself stranded in Hell, it also means another 15-20 years of him running around the earth and being a pain in the devil's plans and killing a lot more demonic minions. Shortsighted of the devil.
However, this leads to an debate my group had after the movie ended. Did Constantine call up the devil and use himself as a sacrifice knowing it would buy him back heaven? Or was the sacrifice genuine? Two of my group thought he did it primarily to get back to heaven, and because he knew that it would work because the rules guaranteed heaven if you give sacrifice. But then, a theme in the movie is that "it's always like it is in the books", and that the rules can be broken (easily, apparently) by either side. Which makes me think it was a genuine self-sacrifice. After all, if it hadn't, would it have worked? I wouldn't think so. Besides, he was pretty resigned to going to Hell anyway; it didn't seem like he was doing it for his own good. Although, there was that middle finger at the end, which suggests a certain asshole-ness to his self-sacrifice.
I really liked the actress who played Gabriel. She looked quite androgynous, and had cool hair. That white outfit at the end was kick-ass too.
EDIT: Also, I SAW THE TRAILER FOR HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE! ON A BIG SCREEN! I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS!
