In a Naruto mood today...

Recently I came across this wallpaper website and have been happily browsing high quality Naruto wallpapers for an hour. There's about 850, and all of them are decent to good. No outright sucky ones.

I saved a bunch, but I wanted to point out these:

Color version of that teen!Naruto pic where he's got a hair-covering forehead protector.

randomly constructed wallpaper that isn't all that great except that it has Naru/Saku kissing in the bottom left corner. Makes me want to write fic.

Angsty baby!Naruto makes me cry. (his eyes are so uber-blue... did he go to Arakis and overdose on The Spice something?)

Teen!Kakashi is pretty.

Kakashi is just pretty all the time. ...darker hotter version of the same pic which I now dub HOTTEST KAKASHI PICTURE EVER.

the boys of Naruto as... bandits? pirates? I dunno. But it's cool. And for once I actually find Sasuke attractive. I'm actually kinda crushing on him here.

Are they all pirates together? Or are either Sasuke or Naruto in charge of pirates and then the other joins?

Is it Shikamaru's pirate gang and Sasuke and Naruto join? Who's the captain? Do they fight over leadership?

What do they do, as pirates? Are we thinking Pirates of the Caribbean or One Piece style pirates?

Where does Sakura come into the picture?

Sadly, I'm not that familiar with One Piece. But the idea of POTC styled-pirates is alluring ...

I say Sasuke and Naruto are in charge of rival pirate gangs. I couldn't see Shikamaru willingly a leader of pirates, but he'd definitely be with Naruto's crew. In fact, you've got the "good guys" with Naruto's crew and the select "bad guys" with Sasuke.

Sakura ... hmmm. I'd hate to put her in a damsel-in-distress role ...

All of that just wholly sucked, too.

It all didn't suck-- you're right that Shikamaru wouldn't willingly captain pirates. But I just jotted this down for him on notepaper, very rough:

On the ocean, you were never guaranteed pure sunlight. Fog provided frequent interference, making shadows a sporadically available commodity. To compensate for the affect this new climate had on his abilities, Shikamaru taught himself to navigate. A pirate thug who could only do major ninjutsu in the summertime was expendable; a navigator was not.

Then it hit me. WATERWORLD! That's how it could be done. Not a literal crossover, but something like it.

Say it's like this:

It's about the beginning of Naruto. Say... between the Wave Country Arc and the Chuunin Exams (which never happen because of the impending natural disaster).

The polar ice caps melt and the water starts to rise. It continues to rise... for two years. Society falls apart. Communities (ninja villages included) scatter and flee. The world descends quickly into anarchy. Many people die by drowning, starvation, or are killed by other humans battling for survival.

After two years the water stops rising. All that's left are a few meager islands and a hell of a lot of boats. Three more years of anarchy pass, after which humanity has sorted itself to a sort of post-anarchy state. There are communities on the islands, but most people live on large floating communities (a la Waterworld, but without the power-boaters), and the only people who really live on the islands are the singular leaders who've managed to claim and defend it (usually by hiring ex-ninjas), and the farmers they employ. Sort of a feudalish system, but without kings. More like businessmen than nobility class. Of course, some are more like tyrants.

Meanwhile, the ninjas who used to belong to villages (or didn't) can make their living by hiring themselves out as mercenaries, or being pirates. Some defend floating communities, some defend islands, some gave up on being ninjas entirely.

Naruto was separated from everyone he knew when the village was abandonned, and spent 4 years surviving and wandering. For the last year or so he's been working as a privateer for one of the islands... meaning he's a paid pirate of sorts. He basically defends the island community he's working for by hunting down known pirates, stealing their booty and killing them, as well as recruiting other ninjas to work for his island. He sort of defends his island's interests abroad, which is a really vague category that means he does all sorts of things from finding people to killing enemies (they deserve it after having, say, attacked the island that Naruto and his new community live off of) to stealing boats and property to simple errands and messsage-carrying.

He worked out a deal with his boss that while he does all this, he can choose his own crew-- and he does that by always being on the look-out for his former villagers. He wants to know who survived and who didn't. He wants to find his old friends.

He's managed to find Kiba, Shino, Shikamaru, and Chouji. All are orphans now or close to it-- a lot of the older generation of ninjas died in the anarchic wars of the first few years.

Where do Sasuke or Sakura come in? What about other characters? ... Haven't worked that out yet. I'm open to thoughts.

I thought the same thing, about the change in the climate because of the sudden influx of water in the world's oceans, etc. Then I thought, "Hey ... what a great place for raskaha to set her Waterworld ninja pirate story! There's the explanation she needs for why it happened!" Imagine the angst you could churn out of that one with the three kids. Not as though Sasuke needs any more of a reason to angst but still.]]]
