The Adult Swim forums, usually a pit of horror that happens to contain a few really cool people amongst the thousands of retards (which I visit nonetheless, because I am a masochist), went against its nature today as someone actually offered up the best reason I've seen ANYWHERE for why Mugen and Spike Spiegel are not the same character:

"Can you even imagine Spike ever wearing red? Can you see Mugen in anything else?"

I think Mugen annoys the shit most people, even the few (Fuu and Jin) that sort of like him. He certainly annoyed me, though I came to love him for it.
