May. 21st, 2005 08:44 pmWhoever it was that told me about Wendlee Lee (voice of Faye Valentine) voicing the woman seducing Mugen (voice of Spike) in a Samurai Champloo episode, and how weird and karmic it was... you were so right. Damn, it's weird.
...Ugh. Just saw an advertisement for S-cry-ed being shown on AS sometime. That show was such pointless stupidity. I had to stop after 8 episodes. Makes me sad to see it on AS.

Dub VAs
Date: 2005-05-22 04:18 am (UTC)allmost of the dub actors come from Canada (BC) and because of their stinginess, use the SAME actors for EVERY anime they license. T_T That's why Wendee Lee is in 3/4 of the anime out there. She's been in SO much, Rurouni Kenshin, Bebop, Trigun (pretty sure), *insert remaining fandoms here*. Would it really kill the studios to get some diversity? =/ Or am I alone in this?Re: Dub VAs
Date: 2005-05-22 04:35 am (UTC)I normally don't mind her because usually the voices she does sound different to me, so I can't pick it out unless I'm warned ahead of time. But this episode of SC she played the voice to sound a lot like Faye's best bedroom voice, and it kinda weirded me out.
Now I kinda wanna see a vid of that conversation in dubbed to CB clips of Spike and Faye talking... like visual fanfic.

Date: 2005-05-22 10:10 pm (UTC)It's not Wendee Lee I have a problem with, it's the recycling of VAs. The problem with English dubbing is that they use who's in their studio rather than searching for who fits. They don't take dubbing seriously, most of the time, but they're getting much better. Bebop and Trigun, for example, are the only anime I will watch dubbed because they just did such fantastic jobs with it; they tried. Wendee is versatile, yes, but I find she is really best for little kid voices or serious characters (Faye) where she can use her natural voice instead of contorting it too much. Kenshin I will watch in small spurts of dub, but still painful.
A really good example of bad is Yugi Ou. I'm not sure who produces it but OMG THE PAIN. Seriously, I can't stand it but I do like the show so I compromise: watch on mute.
But "visual fanfic", eh? I think you may be on to something...

Date: 2005-05-22 11:27 pm (UTC)Bebop I've watched in dub from the beginning, and Trigun as well, and I like them considerably. It also helps that the shows are good. I find I like the dubs of shows with adult characters better than dubs of shows with child/teen characters. Maybe it's just the more mature subject matter means it doesn't feel as outlandish for those voice actors/studios new to dubbing anime, and their performances come off as more comfortable because of that. Trigun I *adore* in dub, though I have a tendency to watch episode 23 in sub most of the time because I like Wolfwood's VA better than the English VA for most of that episode. Vash, though... Vash's dub VA did such a wonderful job.
Watching Kenshin for you sounds like what watching IY is for me. I don't care for most of it, and certain things pain me quite a lot, but I'll watch it occasionally anyway.
