new icon! and trigun stuff.

timepiececlockI got all nostalgic and watched some of the last DVD of Trigun over lunch.
My favorite episode of Trigun is most definitely "Sin". Episode no. 24. I loved Legato's entire death scene, and how Cahs ended up shooting *execution* style, not like running or or in a fight or anything... shot point-blank through the forehead while on his knees. It was a very dramatic scene. Later I plan on going on in great detail on my opinons about the end of the series, and the philosphical themes and character dynamics and stuff. Cause I'm bored and I love that show.
Also, new icon! I was flipping through screen caps and this shot was just too good not to mock. Too bad it can't be bigger. ^-^

Date: 2002-12-17 04:57 pm (UTC)It does start off funny, and it stays very funny, though it becomes other things too. Actually, I like it better than Cowboy Bebop. CB was more subtle in places, but I've seen all but the last four epsiodes it seemed to lack a very linear storyline. Most (though not all) of the episodes are just individual stories. Trigun has a more chronological storyline, and its individual epsiodes, while separate stories are more threaded together than CB, and show more about the characters. One of my problems with CB was that, with the exception of Faye, I didn't feel like I knew the characters very much--- there was so much "dark, unspoken past" hanging over everyone's head, and even when parts of it were revealed, it left me kind of cold.
I liked Trigun better for that reason--- I got attached to ALL the characters, heroes and villains and everything in between, even when I hated them passionately, I loved watching them.
But don't get me wrong-- Cowboy Bebop is a great series, and if you come out liking it more, it won't surprise me. I think its a matter of personal taste rather tahn differences in quality.

Ohhh! Did you get the ENTIRE series collected? You gonna watch it dubbed or subbed? For teh msot part the dub is very good, especially the English voice of Vash (main character), who's excellent throughout. But I always have to watch the last 4 episodes in subtitled, cause they're the best that way, especially episode 23.
Yep, got 'em all. I usually watch it subbed since that was the way it was intended but I usually go back and watch the dub. Thus far, only the Cowboy Bebop dub was better than the sub (not that the Japanese actors weren't good, but the American actors were better :) ).

Note to self; take off two of my LJ icons from the rotation since they have spoilers. Honestly, you haven't seen how it all ends? If so, then I completely understand why you don't hold Bebop in as high regard as I do. The ending wraps up the series beautifully and takes us back to the beginning. As for the lack of chronology, I'd have to disagree there. While each episode stands on its own, there are subtle connections between episodes (Jamming with Edward connecting Hard Luck Women, My Funny Valentine connecting Speak Like a Child, etc.). If you get a chance to see the last four episodes, you'll see how it all ties together :)
Back I go to watch Trigun. Right now I'm up to And Between the Wasteland and Sky.

Date: 2002-12-18 07:13 pm (UTC)And since I wrote the previous comment, I've thought about it more and realized a better way to phrase what I meant to say: CB *does* have connecting threads but I can't get into the characters because they don't seem to change very much, either to grow (like Willow in BtVS) or to descend (like Westely in AtS). The last episode I saw, Spike and Jet seemed to me like they were the same two guys as they were in the beginning of the series. I like shows where characters change over time; for better or worse, they're not the same by the end as they were when the show began. Buffy is a great example of that, and so is Trigun.
Now, granted, I haven't seen the last two epsiodes, so its tru I don't know how Spike's story concludes, but I still feel like 22 epiodes should have been enough to see something more along those lines. But I will watch them eventually, don't worry. ;)
Back I go to watch Trigun. Right now I'm up to And Between the Wasteland and Sky.
AH! Like that ep. BD Neon! Love the part with Vash banging his skull against the little boy's. Too funny.
Just wait until you get introduced to Nicholas Wolfwood, next ep. Wolfwood simply rocks.

Faye's the only one that does change (I won't go into the specifics for fear of spoiling anything for you). However, I actually liked that because you ended up seeing how they got to where they were in the series instead of seeing them develop. It's a rare thing, having characters fleshed out at the very beginning of the series. First time I saw Spike, I knew he was this cool, suave, funny, yet mysterious person. The first time I saw Jet, I knew he was a grizzled, disheartened ex cop with a troubled past. Same goes for Faye. Ed was, well, Ed :) Anywho, to each their own. I worship the Bebop, you worship Vash :)
I'm about to head on home to continue in the Trigun goodness. I've gotta see where this thing with Legato is going.

Date: 2002-12-18 07:40 pm (UTC)I love how he says his name when he introduces himself. They actors say it the exact same way in the enlgish AND the japanese, stretching out the sounds, espespecially the 'a' and the 'u'.

I cracked up so much when I saw that. I was watching it with a friend, and it was her first time too, and for weeks after we kept blurting out for no reason, "Legaaaaato. Legato Bluuuuuesummers." And then dissolveing into fits of giggling. I think we annoyed our non-anime friends a bit.
I also loved the part with Vash holding a gun to the guy. I liked that two-parter cause it tells you more about Vash, and what he's really capable of. As well as, you know, introducing Legato. With the head-in-bag thing that wasn't said but you just KNEW it was there. I find Legato to be very creepy, and yet weirdly funny at the same time, like how he's ALWAYS eating something. I love his English voice-- the dead-pan tone is perfectly done.
If you like backstory, don't worry; Trigun has a lot of it, and it gets deeper the further you go. I love the way the whole storyline is built throughout the series, and how its concluded. But I won't tell you anything, cause you NEED to be unspoiled for it all.
I knwo you haven't gotten there yet, but episode 14 (Little Arcadia) was my least favorite, btw. But really the only one out of all of them that I didn't like.
Anywho, to each their own. I worship the Bebop, you worship Vash :)

Ha! Isn't Legato great? Meanie too though, using Chapel's arm to kill Wolfwood.
Did you like it in 5th Moon when Wolfwood just outright shot that other Gung-Ho Gun guy? Did you suspect that Wolfwood had a secret agenda from the beginning? I did, but all the way up to episode 23 I persisted in thinking that he was an assassin from his church, sent out to "take care of" the "menace to society" that was Vash.
Does this mean you're near to finished?

Date: 2003-01-04 05:41 am (UTC)Sin was a great ep, but I think Paradise stands out more for me. Maybe because Wolfwood is kinda like a poor man's Spike Spiegel. Wolfwood's exit kinda teared me up, but I was so glad that Vash needed Wolfwood's help to take out Knives.
I don't remember Wolfwood shooting any Gung-Ho members in Fifth Moon. I do remember when he offs the kid in Alternative. I did not see that coming because I was thinking, 'Oh, here we go. Vash is gonna talk him out of his evilness. Again.' And then, BANG. Made me think, would I have not done the same thing Wolfwood did? I mean, he was going to shoot Vash. Right?
And I kinda figured out Wolfwood was a Gung-Ho gun because he never got as much gunfire poured on him like Vash did throughout the eps. But, that's just my paranoid nature I guess :)

Date: 2003-01-04 05:55 am (UTC)What broke my heart about the Wolfwood killing Zazie (Alternative kid), was the look that Milly gave him. That scene was wonderfully done, I thought, as was the relationship between W/Milly. There wasn't a lot of overt romance in the series, but when they came together in Paradise is wasn't surprising, just quietly appropriate. And I felt so horrible in the end when you could hear Milly screaming and crying. And the way Vash and Meryl looked as they listened...
:siiiiiigh: I'm a vash/meryl fan mostly though. I love them together, though there's not a lot of fic out there on the net for that ship, and I think I've read almost every one on ff.net.
