I need a music rant every once in a while to refresh my perspective on why I hate what I hate so.

I just listened to the first 30 seconds of Gary Allan's cover of "Best I Ever Had" by Vertical Horizon.

I had to turn it off after 30 seconds with a vocal shudder. Way to ruin a song. I'm all "Wait, what? No! Stop it! Just stop it, damnit! That song was fucking fine! It was beautiful and now it sounds all twang-y and why, WHY did you feel that was necessary? Please stop hurting it."

It never fails to amaze me how shamelessly the country music industry will rip off any love song that was popular on pop charts (or in the case of this song, not very popular on charts as a single, more of an indie favorite off their ablum), remake it with a country twang accent, and proceed to rape it for its value to an audience of country music fans.

One of the many (MANY) reasons I don't listen to country radio stations. I can't go an hour without hearing a country-fied remake of something I have probably bought or downloaded the original for. And the only reason I've listened long enough to know that much is because of a few road trips with the sort of people who do listen to country radio stations.


It pisses me off nearly as much as the sampling of my favorite rock and pop songs and ballads that the rap industry regularly practices. The only reason sampling for rap bothers mea smidgen more than sampling for country is that I've been exposed to rap songs more, and had more unfortunate opportunity to think about it. They both piss me off.


For some reason, remaking or covering songs within the same music genre doesn't piss me off. What's up with that? Then again, I think it's the regularity of it in the country and rap industries that really gets me. It's friggin systematic.


SIDE NOTES FROM WATCHING VH1 WAY TOO EARLY IN THE MORNING:
I always forget how hot the lead singer of Lifehouse is until the next time I see him. I always think "Wow, he's my kind of hot", but then I never retain the memory for any significant length of time.
Why do I like Kelly Clarkson's new video? The song isn't even all that great...but damn if I don't like the video.

HAA! I was watching VH-1 in the wee early hours of the morning, too, saw the Lifehouse video, and thought the EXACT same thing. :)
