Fruits Basket thoughts.
"I, on the other hand, am not nice at all."
...is probably my favorite Shigure line in all of FB so far. I literally squealed out loud when I read it, because it was like Shigure confirming all these things about his character that had been hinted subtly over the series.
And you gotta question it too-- is he just saying that to embellish one of his many facades? Is he faking being a manipulative bastard, given all the times he's been kind or considerate, especially to Tohru? Or were those times all part of some opportunistic endeavor of some secret manipulative master plan? Does he really have a plan at all, or was he telling Rin the truth when he said he had no idea? Is Shigure really the bastard who plays at being the amusing and friendly layabout, or is he really a decent hearted guy who plays at being a bastard? If you're not sure how much of what comes out of his mouth can be believed, does that mean he's lying about not being nice?
How much faith can we put in the fact that Hatori trusts him? Does Hatori trust Shigure because he thinks Shigure has good intentions, or just because he thinks Shigure's selfish goals might have incidentally positive side effects for everyone else? Is Hatori naive to trust Shigure, or does he just think that whatever Shigure does or doesn't do, as far as he's concerned it doesn't really matter in the long run? Is Hatori a trustworthy guy himself, given his closeness with Akito and the whole memory-wiping threat of power?
ARGH! It's driving me crazy wanting to analyze this stuff. Shigure's so slippery.
