Ewan McGregor cured my menstral cramps.

Well, I think that was the most needlessly explosive movie I've seen in about 5 years.

I went through a great deal of it saying "Why is that blowing up?" And, "wait, what's the point of all the shooting here?" and of course, "What about all the innocent bystanders? And who's going to clean this up afterward?"

And my favorite thought came after the movie, from my dad, in answer to my question of why the fan would blow up at all:

Dad: "It wouldn't. No person in their right mind would build something that you could blow up just by pulling one lever."
Mom: "It'd be like those big red buttons that say 'Do not push' sitting within easy access of any passing idiot."
Shaka: "Well, maybe he pulled the lever but somehow pulled it wrong or only part way so that made it--- wait, no, no one would build anything that would blow up because of that, either."

Nevertheless, I enjoyed the movie. I liked the look of it (aside from the little merchandize plugs everywhere)-- lots of high contrast stuff, with pretty reflections and intense lighting. In a movie like this, that visual style worked well.

AND OMG EWAN MCGREGOR IS *SO* HOT IN THIS MOVIE. If I ever needed a demonstration of whether its worth it or not to go see a movie with Ewan McGregor as the leading man and no other reason is necessary, it's this movie. (though the movie was a good fun popcorn movie on its own merit.)

Scarlett Johanson was unbelievably pretty, and Ewan McGregor was a little less pretty, but twice as yummy for it.

Why do I find him so hot?

I think it must be that, while he's got an incredibly charming smile and very expressive eyes, there's something about him that stills seems...accessible. Yeah, he's handsome-- but the handsomeness is the whole thing, not any particular feature. And he doesn't look like Brad Pitt... but at the same time I can't imagine dating Brad Pitt. I can totally, totally imagine dating Ewan McGregor. And swooning over him. Like with girlish squeeling "let me show you off to the world but at the same time keep you entirely to myself" glee.

I am smitten. I have been since SW: Episode 1, and my smitten-factor has only gotten higher with each movie. Also? HE HAS TWO ACCENTS. Two accents in this movie: Scottish and West Coast American. TWO FUCKING ACCENTS OMG LOVE. AND LUST.

The science in this movie was laughable and gruesome at the same time. Several times I winced or flinched out of ick factor. Still, it held up well enough with the concept and was acted well enough to carry through the movie.

Sean Bean needs to stop playing villains. I mean really. I'd like to see him be a hero again like when he kicked total butt as Odysius (my spelling sucks tonight) in Troy.

OVERALL SCORE FOR The Island: B-

A fun popcorn movie that's probably better on screen than on video. AND DID I MENTION THE EXTREME HOTNESS OF EWAN MCGREGOR IN THIS MOVIE? WE'RE TALKING WET PANTIES IN THE AUDIENCE, PEOPLE.

I'm yet to see it - it opens here this week. I'd been wondering whether to go or not, as it's not had the best reviews, but I am shallow enough to go just for the Ewan factor. ;) And your review has persuaded me it would be well worth it!

In that case I'm glad I didn't have too much spoilery stuff in here. :) Enjoy the Ewan goodness!

Watch for the scenes where he has to play himself with an American accent imitating himself with his real scottish accent. You'll love it.
