So. The last episode of Paranoia Agent.

I almost feel like this was anticlimactic when compared to the previous episode. A winding down of story and the falling resolution, if you will. The exciting episode was the the previous one, where the revelation about Tsukiko and Maromi was made. In some ways I felt those parts were predictable, but I loved the sequences of the crazy young detective fighting evil in his full homeless geek warrior gear. I also can't help but admire the way all the symbolism and imagery fits with the overall story, especially in the end. Although I could guess some parts of the Maromi stuff, that doesn't take away from how impressively interconnected the entire series is. The overall plot was very well...designed and executed.

Although I still wish the end result had been something a little more exciting than Tsukiko's childhood trauma. Yadda yadda yadda, screw the stupid little dog. In the end my favorite scenes besides the young crazy detective were of the older detective's wife and her metaphysical battle to win back her husband... who, frankly, didn't look like he deserved her anymore, but whom she loved anyway. I found it sad that he had eventually fallen victim to the escapism and self-pity that he'd once helped his wife overcome, but I found it encouraging that, given the reversal of roles, she was able to pull him out of it in turn.

The end was both good and bad, I felt. It wasn't the strongest episode by far, but it mostly did its job as a finale. Like I said, the previous one felt more like a climax. Traditionally the climax of a plot is when the protagonist makes the final decision that sets him on a final course of action-- and everything else is just falling resolution. The climax for this show was solving the mystery-- where one of the several protagonists finally solved the question of Maromi and Lil' Slugger, and where we the audience find out. This episode was just fall-out from that revelation.

The following isn't a quality judgement, merely a fan reaction, but I found it grossly sad and unfair that everyone gets to go back to a normal life except the crazy young detective. He solved the frelling mystery, did his damn job, made it possible for Tsukiko to confront her monsters, saved Tokyo, and what do the fates reward him with? INSANITY. MENTAL WARD. Doesn't seem fair at all.

But again, that's not a quality judgement, because PA has never given the impression of guaranteeing a happy ending even for those that deserve it. I'm also confused as to why Tsukiko looks 16 or something. What's up with that? Is she having mental relapses too?

I'll give you some comments later. But as for the ending, I'm hearing that they're supposedly making another season for PA.

Paranoia Agent hurt my head, end of story. .__. Then again, anything Satoshi Kon works on ends up really messing with my head for a few weeks. 9.9 I think the only one that DIDN'T really screw with me was Millenium Actress.

Perfect Blue... gah, we STILL talk about when we watched that...
