Dub

Al: We fought about who got to marry Winry, too.
Ed: We did, really?
Al: Yeah, that's when we fought the hardest.

::blink::stare::

Umm....what the fuck? That last line was *not* in the script. Goddamnit I hate when the dub invents dialogue that adds to a misconsception about the series, especially when it's a voiceover so it's not like they need to match the flaps. They just add it because they feel like it. ::glowers at Funimation:: Dude, you think we need you shoving pairings down our throats? Must you take subtlely portrayed relationships and trying to make them obvious? FMA's all about the lack of explicitness in ships; that's not something that has to be "fixed" for an English audience.

::grumble-grumble:: GRRRR!AARRRRRRGH! And the reason this is annoying me so much was that they ruined one of my favorite Ed/Al conversations in the entire series. Not only did they add this misguiding bit about Winry, but they took out the stuff about Ed complaining how Al always won the arguments.

I'm disappointed. Usually the dub has been able to make things more funny. In this scene they made up stuff to add *and* they made it less funny than it would have been if they'd translated it directly.

On the other hand, the Winry/Scieszka stuff was well-done. I loved those scenes in the subbed too. Sloth is an alien! Aaahhh, Scieszka.

Episode 39 was pretty good. I do like Marta's voice.

It's been a while since I've seen that episode, but in the manga (that bit was in Volume 4) Al said that Edward won that argument. After which, Ed goes, "Yeah, then we both got dumped." Was it along those same lines in the anime? Cuz I can't remember.

Because Winry discovered her lesbosity.

It's been a while since I've seen the sub, but I remember Edward complaining that Al always won their arguments. And then they were listing the kind of things they argued about, and the topic of got to marry Winry was one of them. They didn't follow with a statement about who won, and there was no emphasis put on it like there was in the dub quote in my post. It was all very casual and amusing and non-shipp, because it was really easy to imagine them arguing about that among other things. Just the same way I promised to marry my kindergarten boyfriend. About that level of seriousness. Amusing for how long ago it was and how young we/they were.

That's how it came off to me in the manga, too. I mean, the inclination towards Ed/Winry is much stronger there, but at that point in the storyline, it seemed like a casual conversation. Not that either of them took it seriously.

Meh. I hate things that needlessly throw flames onto the shipper fires, since they already burn pretty hotly - and like you said, this is NOT a show about blatant 'ships. :P

I am so sorry to post on your journal without your permission...I was reading some of the friend entries from the Avatar Community (just cuz I was bored) and I stumbled across this one. I absolutely have to agree with you on this one. Why is it that they try to stuff pairings down our throats?! The whole story of FMA hints lightly here and there about certain pairings, but the biggest, most prominent relationship in the entire series, to me anyways, is the love of two brothers just trying to set things right with their lives. I really don't think that the creator intended to beat us on the head with a Winry/Ed stick, which the pairing itself is just fine (trust me no problem there), but I like the idea of the brotherly love that seems to be most prominent.

FMA was a very well thought out Manga and Anime. No wonder so many people love it so much ^_^=
