Cave of the Two Lovers (with slightly bad audio)

The trio:

This is the season of Naked Sokka, isn't it? 2/2 so far! He'll be shirtless for every episode Zuko was shirtless last season, possibly more.

The octopus thing looks pretty complicated actually. Katara's icicle daggers are wicked, though.

These hippies are GREAT! They really are hippies! I love their costumes. And that they're clearly stoned. And their song was so bad it was good, especially the end bit.

I liked the yellow flowers in Katara's hair. Yellow suits her.

Zuko & Iroh:

Wow, I *was* right about Zuko's hair. Too bad he won't be bald though. Hm... I take it this means two or three weeks have passed? That's about three weeks' hair growth. Heehee. He looks like Lupin III.

Clearly Zuko's ninja skills don't extend to wildlife survival, just to breaking and entering.

Heh. Iroh's lack of a topknot makes him look even more like the squatting monkey statue he had back on the ship.

Is it just me, or does Zuko seem... about three times as laid back as he normally is? I mean, obviously he's whining and stomping about their current situation, but... his face animation and his voice acting seem considerably less angsty. And his interaction with Iroh is a lot more casual. I think they were going for humor in the scene, but my interest is tweaked. Perhaps Zuko is a lot like Sokka once you get him away from Princehood. ...Then again that's not a suprise either. I guess what's surprising me is how quickly he seems to be relaxing. It's making Zuko sound younger, which is funny because in that outfit and hairstyle he LOOKS older.

The trio:

Hippie: "And DIE!!!"

Aang: "We can make it." Aah, Aang believes in the power of his love for Katara. That's endearing. Also, we already knew that. --Is Aang's voice changing?

Hey, it's tanks again. The unexplainable totally anachronistic Fire Nation tanks! Whee. Logic, my show doth not love thee.

Fire Nation commanding officer at the foot of the cave: "Wait! It's too dangerous. Haven't you heard the song?" ::sporfle::

Argh! The sound's terrible on this computer's speakers!

Zuko & Iroh:

You know why Zuko is weird this episode? He keeps SMILING. Obviously, being a fugitive doesn't bother him that much.

"Mushi"? BWAHAH. And I love the glare Iroh gives him.

Um.... Is that Sang, Saan, or Song? Definitely San. She's cute. And...reminds me of a weird mixture of Belle from Beauty & the Beast meets the servant woman from Spirited Away. Um, is it just me or does she look kinda like how you imagine Katara and Zuko's daughter might look?

Wow, that haircut REALLY makes Zuko look old. And tall. How can he be taller with shorter hair?
"Is your dad fighting in the war too?"
"...yeah." That must'a hurt coming up.

The trio:

Wolfbat? Looks more like Mongoosebat. Still, nasty.

That was a pretty heroic save. Aang does make a good hero.

Zuko & Iroh:

"The Fire Nation has hurt you." Well, not the way you think lady, but they've certainly done that. I like how he stopped her from touching him. Firm, but not rude or harsh.

"It's okay. They've hurt me too." Yes Zuko. Welcome to the real world, which also sucks.

The trio:

Hm... I was right. From the title I thought it'd be tomb of some sort.

Flashback! ...Lovers of enemy villages wearing blue and red clothing. HUH.

Omashu, huh? Okay, me love this flashback long time.

The kissing thing? That was adorable. And surprisingly open-ended. ::hugs Aang::

Zuko & Iroh:

Oh Zuko. ::sigh::

The trio:

So... was that a kiss or not? I'm thinking yeah. Still the ambiguity is nicely played, nicely played.

Giant badgers! That's cool. ...Giant EARTHBENDING badgers! ...so who taught the other countries their elements?

"Really? We let huge ferocious beasts lead our way."

HAAHAHA. Appa/Momo is canon. And apparently they're terrible gossips too.

Sokka/Katara hug-- good. If I lost my brother in a tunnel I'd hug him pretty hard too.

Aaaaah, that whole "journey" was adorable. After get home I think I'll go to write more of my K/Z porn fic.

And... the city has fallen. That right there is the biggest surprise of the episode and I would have LOVED not to have heard about it before hand. Somehow kills the emotional reaction, ya know?

Future interlude

San: And then children, I tried to help the poor woobie kid. And do you know what happens when you be a good Buddhist and try to help poor woobie kids?

Kids: **chorus** No Grandma!

San: They steal your chocobo, because woobies are ungrateful self-pitying bags of destructive angst.

Kids: **stare**

San: Now, the next time a handsome young man or a bright-eyed young lady asks you for help, be a good neighbor and give them help. But also remember what I always tell you...

Kids: *reciting* "No woobies at the dinner table!"

San: Exactly! Now run along children. After your chores you can bury alive effigies of Fire Nation troops, and then I'll bake cookies.

I wonder how many Avatar fanfics got jossed by that last scene in the episode? A lot, methinks.

That'd be swell.

And San was wearing Korean clothing! Korean! *squee* Also, Fire Nation bending mythology has got to touch upon dragons somehow. I mean, come on, the damn scaly critters are everywhere! (The teapot, the temple, the TCG cards, under Roku's big dead butt--everywhere.)

I thought her name was San too, after repeated listenings.

Korean? Cool. I did notice her clothing (especially the skirts), but I didn't associate it with a particular origin. Neat.

Yeah, I hope we seem dragon mythology at some point too. Having read like 50 million fantasy novels growing up, I love me some dragons.

::DISTRACTS YOU WITH FUTUREFIC DRABBLE::

----------
Katara spends long nights with Pajha and young Nanako poring over the tomes that were Zuko's gift from the Fire Nation. There are treaties and trade settlements, codes of internal maritime law, meterological studies, and bending scrolls.

Lord Zuko's scribes were as meticulous as they were thorough. Katara now knows the tarrif rate on seal fur two centuries ago to the day, and how the disease that massacered the Southern Water Tribes and the Southern Earth Kingdom--thirty years before the great war--was finally cured. Katara learns that a species of antarctic waterfowl she sees every spring was unheard of in Zuko's kingdom eight hundred years ago, and now it flocks to the beaches of seven of the nine Great Isles.

She reads the campaign strategies and death records for every assault launched against the South Pole from the time Souzen decided to expand his territory to the year Katara's father went to war, and she cannot speak to Pajha for a week.

I need help.

So, remember my Katara/Blue Spirit fic that I promise will turn at least mildly graphic?

I've decided I want to update it to current canon Zuko. Emotionally, current canon Zuko is getting closer to the characterization I was using anyway. Hell, the fic already has him acting on his own with Iroh (who is wanted for treason), and the only difference would be that now Zuko is wanted also, and Zuko symbolically cut his hair.

That wouldn't be a difference at all, except that in my fic the Blue Spirit's pony tail reminds Katara of Zuko, so he's already in her thoughts when she hears him slip up and speak... and so she recognizes him. Without that little thing to make her think of Zuko at the exact moment he talks, the chances of her guessing its him on voice alone is pretty slim.

So... ideas? When crawling around a ventilation shaft or crawlspace, in near total darkness, what could the Blue Spirit do/be/have to make Katara think of Zuko specifically? Should it be something in the way he looks? Something he's carrying that she once saw similar on Zuko? Something in the way in which he acts?

Well, you could have it be a little later in season two, and have Zuko regrow a pony tail.

YAY BLUE SPIRIT FIC WOO-HOO!

It'd take him about 3-4 years to grow his queue back to that length, unfortunately. :) Any other ideas?

Take the voice recognition and emphasize it with his grip on her wrist. Ok, yeah, I know it’s a stretch but physical contact makes an impression. While I highly doubt Katara could recognize our hot-blooded boy by touch alone (er, anybody else’s brain just go to a nice Wrong Place?) the shock of contact would take her suspicions about his voice and get creative. Basically, a tense moment will turn a sudden disbelieving inspiration into an unexpected, but irresistible, epiphany.

…and if all else fails, claim women’s intuition. >_>

That's perfect! I could spin that. It works as a really personal sensory connection, so in a way it might work even better than the pony tail. That would put her in mind for Zuko and then his voice would be recognizable. After some leaps of logic she could inuit (is that a verb?) the rest on her own.

Also, touching of any kind works as a nice precedent/lead-in for later touching. :)

It's going there now, and with a big wide grin!

Dude.

I sat down to work on this just now.

And my WinAmp player went to Paul Simon's "Call Me Al" and now all I want to do is sing along. I can't write angsty intimacy to this song! It's impossible! This is so far from being a porn song or an angst song it's ridiculous.

::headdesk::

How am I supposed to finish this if all I want to do is bounce in my chair and sing IF YOU'LL BE MY BODYGUARD....!
