I have to write a 4-6 page single-spaced policy paper describing a policy recommendation for how the U.S. might "responsibly pull out of Iraq."

Um, yeah.

That's really the $64,000 question, isn't it?

I can't believe I'll be graduating in two and a half weeks. I'm looking for jobs in San Diego right now, because Irvine is a drag for anyone single and under 30, and I'd rather stab my eye out with a kunai-shaped spork than live in Los Angeles for anything other than future schooling. Moving to Southern California two years ago has been both a positive and negative experience, but so far I'm not enthused with anything the LA/OrangeCounty community has to offer, and the whole place often depresses me. San Diego is more of a relaxed place, and also my brother lives there, so I won't be totally alone.

Now I just need to pass my last classes and find a job. Yeesh. Job-hunting SUCKS.

Hello darkness my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping.
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.

In restless dreams I walked alone,
Narrow streets of cobblestone.
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never shared.
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence.

"Fools" said I, "You do not know,
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed
In the wells of silence.

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls."
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence.

I've always looked back on this song and agreed that it is an excellent example of the lesson she was trying to convey: that every word in a poetic work should serve the whole. What I love about this song is not just the slightly creepy cultish theme or the pessimistic ideas, or even the way it's played. What I love is that you can pick out almost any noun or verb or adverb in the song and easily trace how it relates to the whole. The themes of sound, silence, and music are in every aspect of the song/poem--- not just what the little "story" is saying, but in each word chosen for its power and place. Figurative language, say hello.

A few of the flist expressed interest in reading my final news story for my Journalism class, the topic of which was the South Dakota ban on abortions.

Because I wasn't able to secure anyone for an in-person interview I had to rely on press statements, so I'm not sure I did anything to "advance the story" as my prof called it. Still, I'm pretty pleased overall, and I ran it by a friend who is the founder and editor of our school's progressive newspaper, and he only found one grammatical error and one suggested word-change, so I'm hoping that's a good sign for my future grades. If anything, it means I seem to have been a really good speller this morning.

Abortion Ban in South Dakota, appx 850 words )
-----------------------------
I was not able to get an in-person interview, so I used a combination of press statements and text of the SD law to serve instead.

Citation:

The above is not a complete list of my sources, but it's a list of the technical stuff I cited.

EDIT: Got a "B". Blegh.

For my Journalism final I'm writing an 800 word story (so short!) and I chose the new South Dakota abortion law as my topic.

For my personal interview I plan on contacting the local Planned Parenthood clinic. I'll probably choose the angle for my story based on what I get from the interview.

Are there any articles with a particularly interesting take on it that you'd like to share? I've read some basic ones from CNN.com and stuff, but if there's any article or link that you find particularly interesting, informative, or otherwise notable, I'd love to see it.

And, in a more personal note, for any doctors/nurses who browse my journal:

If you have performed abortions yourself or worked in some manner with women getting abortions (or in such an environment), and would like to be interviewed, I'd love to hear from you and possibly use you as a source. Likewise if you are a lawyer or a judge and have some experience with reproductive rights law.
