-This, on the other hand looks like a Will Ferrel movie I can finally really enjoy. Because hey, it's about writing!

My thoughts exactly. They even have the not-really-there spider thing going on. A+ for originality, guys--who'd have thought to use boys? ;D

It looks like they're sacrificing creep-factor and characterization for big explosive stuff. There's this clip at the end end where he reassembles himself and his car after running through a semi-truck. Huh-wuh? At least The Craft had some more modest aims: it was as much about illusion as changing tangible things. We only got to see the hint of real kick-ass power at the very end of the movie. It's a little easier to believe that outright god-like behavior.

Also, the bugs in the best won't beat the bugs in the bathroom and the snakes. Oh man, the snakes.

Oh, and you notice from the trailer how they keep mentioning this girl, then show the various male characters fighting over her with their magical powers, and she's even unconcious and floating in a few clips? This is just going by the trailer but, damn... what a different message from The Craft. The Craft portrayed boys as evil, girls as strong. This movie appears to portray girls as objects and boys as strong. Interesting. Do you think they'll have a murder?


Something about the idea of a group of teens from "special families" also reminds me of these books I read about witches as a teen-- The Secret Circle, I think they were called. But that had both male and female witches, with the main character as female. It was pretty good, though. 3 books, I think it was my favorite L.J. Smith series.

I like the concept of them being able to do anything, but it weakens them every time--you can have everything, but it takes away from you. So I'm not completely hissing at what they're doing here, but my teeth are bared.

I will never be able to watch The Craft again solely because of that scene. All my fears, right there? They were one.

It's hard to be open to the whole "damsel in distress" idea anymore. People do it so terribly and the girl is either tied up somewhere, or latched to her love interest's side. You never see her fleshed out--you see her terrified, in lust, or puppy-dog eyed. I don't mind a character being helpless. Some characters are helpless. It doesn't mean that they should be reduced to a plot point. I kinda hope that they fail to save her, honestly, happy endings always seem more like a stroke to the boy's ego. Phht.

Ah, L.J. Smith. Her favorite overtones? Inner strength and sexual tension. And soul mates, but whatever. It's lovely to see a series where magic isn't solely male or female oriented. I love to see the sexes on equal footing in some way--whether they just simply know how to counter what the other's got or have each other's powers.

The trailer clip I saw on tv was a lot shorter, so I was expecting something more cult-like too. But from the full trailer it looks like The Craft. Even the name is similar.

It's harder to avoid than you think--my mum once accidentally sent me to one because they failed to mention that they, you know, were a Christian camp. Oops.

I'd be breaking into the nurse's office to use the phone within TWO HOURS. My parents would have me on a bus back in half that time. Not because they fear church camps, but because they know I'd freak out. And, well... my mom would definitely pull me out. My dad's would be a bit more casual about it... he apparently lost his virginity at church camp when he 15, so he's got happy memories. ::eyeroll::

Even so, there's probably different levels of scary when it comes to camps... there's the relatively normal camp stuff plus prayers and a bit of bible study, and then there's the really scary army-building places.

- I've seen that trailer, and it actually does look interesting. As long as Will Ferrell tries toning down on the Will Ferrell, it'd be cool. :) ((Plus, Emma Thompson!))

- Hmmm... this manages to look scarier than 'The Covenant'. But then again, it's less far-fetched. *is secretly fascinated*
