It's hard to be open to the whole "damsel in distress" idea anymore. People do it so terribly and the girl is either tied up somewhere, or latched to her love interest's side. You never see her fleshed out--you see her terrified, in lust, or puppy-dog eyed. I don't mind a character being helpless. Some characters are helpless. It doesn't mean that they should be reduced to a plot point. I kinda hope that they fail to save her, honestly, happy endings always seem more like a stroke to the boy's ego. Phht.
Ah, L.J. Smith. Her favorite overtones? Inner strength and sexual tension. And soul mates, but whatever. It's lovely to see a series where magic isn't solely male or female oriented. I love to see the sexes on equal footing in some way--whether they just simply know how to counter what the other's got or have each other's powers.
