Date: 2008-01-15 11:45 pm (UTC)Another side effect of betraying the FN and becoming a rebel (besides losing his stuff) is that Zuko starts sleepwalking. One night Sokka is woken up just in time to stop Zuko from accidentally falling off a terrace. Zuko ends up hanging over the side and Sokka has to pull him up by hand (yay work those arms Sokka!). It makes for awkward enemy-friend male bonding time, much cool dialogue, and Sokka almost starts being Zuko's friend. For a night. Traumatic circumstances, and all! It is during Zuko's sleepy mumblings that Sokka is the first person to discern how Zuko got his scar, though Sokka doesn't ask about it when Zuko's awake so Zuko doesn't know he talked.
They're still not friends in the morning, but when the group sleeps Sokka always puts himself somewhere between where Zuko sleeps and the balcony side. Not cause they're friends! Because Aang needs a firebending teacher. And because Sokka doesn't like carrying all the food back to camp by himself after they go hunting. And he still has to learn how Zuko disarmed him when Sokka clearly has the superior weapon and greater natural sword-wielding talent.

Date: 2008-01-15 10:58 pm (UTC)Draco spends the summer after DH under house arrest, pending trial. He sneaks out one night (just cause he needs air; he's too scared of the aurors hunting him down to run away permanently.) It's unusually hot in England because of climate change (still being debated how much is a result of muggle industry and how much Voldemort is responible for), and Draco stupidly hasn't had any water all day, and actually faints on his broom. Ginny happens to be nearby and sees a person falling from a broom, and rescues him. This is followed by a long flight back to Draco's safehouse where she berates his "unconcious" person and ends up giving him an entire history of her relationship with Harry and Its Problems. At the end of the fic they reach the safehouse, Draco says something snappy, and she realizes he's been awake THE WHOLE TIME, so she pushes him off her broom so he falls six or eight feet to the roof. The end. p.s. Draco's now short one broom, since Ginny may save his wretched little life but no way she's saving his stuff too.

Date: 2008-01-23 12:57 am (UTC)I think I finally solved one of the things slowing me down: Sakura's motivation and her reactions to all this. I decided that the best thing I can do is turn the story completely around so fast it leaves Kakashi dizzy. HAH! This will be such fun.
((Er... it WAS you that I was squealing about Kakasaku with, right?))

Date: 2008-01-16 12:39 am (UTC)Post war.
Toph doesn't want to inherit her family's economic empire after they're assassinated, but she can't abandon the people and the lands of her family to be exploited by the attorney (is there an ancient-sounding word for lawyer? they must have had them) who wants to make his fortune and his political career off the Bei Fong coattails, no matter what he destroys in the process.
Katara doesn't want be responsible for fixing the diplomatic problems of the Water Tribes (she's only sixteen for snow's sake!) but if they don't find a way to bring trade back to the South now that the war is over, the depleted tribe might have to relocate to the North to survive.
Toph has the means, Katara has the need. They both have the determination, but they've never worked that well together without Aang as buffer. Both young women will have to grow up, open up, and stand up. Each has the world on her shoulders, and each has to learn what it means to be a leader, and what it means to be a friend.

Date: 2008-01-16 06:55 am (UTC)When Major Armstrong's private cat breeding business (uncharitably called a "kitten farm" by some) is discovered after Havoc and Farman crash at his house one night after an office party, Armstrong is forced to give his cats up to the state or pay exorbitant fees for illegal animal breeding and operating without a business license. Instead of releasing his beloved kits to the city shelter, he convinces Mustang that they can train the cats to serve the military.
Roy is appropriately skeptical, but Hawkeye's on vacation for two weeks so she's not around to back him up, and Armstrong wins him over with the promise of assigning six of the messenger-spy cats to work specifically for Mustang's office (he doesn't explain how to actually make this work, just promises that it will.) By the time Riza gets back, well-rested and sharp, she discovers
herRoy's office has become a zoo, that her boss has suddenly become an avid supporter of animal rights, that Feury is suffering allergic reactions and can't come into work, and that in addition to the hair everywhere Roy's penchant for scheming has reached new and impressive lows. ("Cat spies, sir?" "Yes, Hawkeye! Briliant, isn't it? You'd never expect that tabby was working for Havoc. I mean just look at the thing.")By the time Riza is done, the cats have all found homes, Major Armstrong is back to his regular work load, Feury is on the recovery path, Havoc has made $800 that no one can quite explain, and Roy goes home with one tiny kitten hidden in his jacket: a sandy, striped, razor-clawed monstrosity he fondly names Eddy.

Date: 2008-01-16 07:48 am (UTC)I actually think it could work in the canon timeline. Like, you know how Al and cats keep finding each other, but in the end they are always forced to part ways? ...See where I'm going with this?

Date: 2008-01-23 09:01 pm (UTC)1 - The island house in summer, age 4, when he had his first fire dream and woke up with his bed in flames. He didn't stop the fire, he didn't call for help-- he hid, terrified, and when his father walked through the burning wreckage to pluck his son's shaken body out of a kitchen cabinet, Zuko knew he would always be safe in his father's arms. The estate burned, the royal family left, and the prince didn't step foot on that beach again in this lifetime.
2 - the Fire Temple's capital library, geological and geographical studies wing, when he was 7. Zuko as a child unintentionally did more damage to the rebel movement than his sister could ever hope to, no matter how many cities she's silently captured. Because Zuko's mistake, which only truly amounted to a few charred rooms and mild smoke-sickness for the librarians (hardly a destroyed building), gave Lord Azulon the idea to censor the cartographers and the navigators, the intellectuals and the traders and the sea captains. Across the world, maps of the Fire Nation disappeared.
3 - the hideout in the forests of the Northern Earth Kingdom, occupied territory, age 16, when a squad of children tried to rob his retinue and make a hostage of his first lieutenant. He tracked them through the night, he rescued his officer, he burned their thatch tree houses to ash on the wind, and he buried three men the next morning, the poisoned arrows from their chests snapping between his fingers.
4 - the Palace of Ba Sing Se, age 16, when he deliberately started a conflagration in the catacombs that became too hot and too pervasive to stop, devouring from beneath the second-oldest palace in the world. Zuko's face was whole and now that he could see clearly again, all he he wanted to see was Azula and fire. ((who knew healing him would make him crazy? Katara sure didn't!))
5 - the Western Air Temple, age 17, when his great-grandfather's spirit, age 12, had his first fire dream and nearly suffocated in the fumes. Zuko walked down the hallways and into the boys room, hands passing over walls and floor, furniture and door frames. Every fire Zuko passed quivered and sank, hiccuping itself into nothing as he absorbed the energy and sang the flames to sleep. When the flames settled the waterbender pulled the blackness from the Avatar's lungs, and they could all breathe easily for one more night without disaster.

Date: 2008-01-23 09:28 pm (UTC)I really like 3, with the image of those arrows snapping in his fingers, and 4 is chilling - the idea that he'd be worse healed than he is scarred (which is probably really true.)
Five made me giggle - that I could actually see happening, and I love the image of Zuko walking through the fire sucking up the flames.

Date: 2008-01-24 06:59 am (UTC)The Genin years, after the chuunin exams but before Itachi and the Akatsuki show up, before Sasuke runs away.
One day, for no reason at all, a vine begins to grow along the village wall. In hours, the vine becomes a curtain, then a wall unto itself, and soon every exit of the town is blocked by bushes and thorns so thick, and roots that go down so deep, that they are impossible to burn through or dig through or cut through.
Then, one by one, the adults start to disappear.
In just days the village is cut off from the outside world, the adults are gone, and no one older than sixteen is left to explain what's happening. The shinobi of the village-- from Naruto's year and older, most of them genin or chuunin-- have to organize the civilian children, find out what jutsu or curse their village is under, and get their parents back.
Meanwhile, the vines are growing taller and taller outside the wall...
