Have you noticed how many amazing M-rated fics are out there for HPverse? It just rocks my socks... it's like Jossverse fandom all over again, the size of HP. It's probably much bigger, actually, and I only looked at BTVS through a Spuffy lens, so no doubt I missed a lot.

But, for example, you know I like Hermione/Draco fic. Last month I was browsing through the annual Dramione Awards, which I haven't ever looked at before, and I was aghast at the amount of well-written, epic or novel-length fics they had, many of them with a mature rating or at the minimum R rating. With ATLA fandom we're lucky to get 4 or 5 great longfics a season, and I can count on one hand the number of epic-length fics that have sexual themes... actually right now I can only think of like 3 in our entire fandom.

As fandom goes, I'm incredibly jealous of the wealth of talent HP attracts. We Zutarians have a lot of talent, but very few of us commit to 70,000 to 200,000 word stories, much less ones with explicit mature content. And really, the characters we play with are in the same age range as the HP characters, so why not?

I remember spending a whole day reading fic from that winners list, and even then I only read like 5 fics out of a whole list. I remember doing that for other fandoms too-- BTVS, Gundam Wing, Cowboy Bebop... ::sigh:: For all that Avatar fandom is huge, I sometimes think our ficdom is sorely lacking in population.

If you're curious, on the list I linked, I recommend:

The God of the Lost - scary + magic + action + fun adventure + epic house wars of awesome, not so much Draco/Hermione as Draco+Hermione+DEADLY THINGS THAT FRIGHTEN ME

Silencio - Broke my fucking heart, in the best way (see unspoilery comments wherein the author sincerely apologizes for that, and marvels that the first thing everyone says to her about the fic is that it totally ruined their day. In a good way.)

Valentine Encounter - slightly less perfect characterization than the two above (features a Hermione/Harry subplot as it was written before book 6), but not a whit less entertaining and sexy as hell plus epic spells and stuff.

I have a weakness for epic spells. That's one thing ATLA is short on: epic magic spells. We have to make due with destiny and the occasional spirit curse.

I don't know how typical cahracterization of Draco in D/Hr fics compares with him in Ginny/Draco fics, but I imagine its fairly similar. I find I like fics where he's still kind of evil, despite falling in love with a "Good" person. I like my evil-turned-good floppy-haired boys to be made really desperate and tortured before they win the day; its a redemption kink.

Let me point you to Arctic Demon's profile for quality Draco/Hermione. That's where I first realized that the Draco/Hermione ship was talented, almost overwhelmingly so. Ginny/Draco is considerably smaller but there's still a lot of quality in it; however, in my personal experience, I've only come across Ginny/Draco oneshots or shortfics that were truly quality, not so much longfics.

Arctic Demon's Draco/Hermione oneshots are a great read, but in her favorites are the Draco/Hermione longfics that make a feast. I've just started "MacBeth" by cyropi myself; I read her oneshot torture!fic featuring a certain Malfoy and I can trust this author because that fic was awesome.

Thank you! I will have to come back and read that rec, no doubt.

The only other HP pairing i read is H/L, which is a pretty small shipdom, so I have no comparison. But I do know that D/Hr fandom is TALENTED, yes. Talented and pervy. And you get longfics that are dramatically different in style and in character interpretation, from the sedate college-romance fic that's like 50 bajillion chapters and kind of resembles older-shoujo, to epic battles as the backdrop of epic romance with epic spells, to really dark torture fics or Hurt/comfort stuff.

There was one, can't remember the title, where Draco basically held hermione "hostage" for months while running all around europe to find a horcrux, and it got very stolkhome syndrome, but in reality he was watchdogging her like witness protection or something, and had been a member of the order for a while but holding her hostage or whatever was all a lie. SO NEAT. Stuff like that-- long and creative and very broad. Je suis tout jealous!
