::whistles:: What a doozy.

That was really very clever. I'll admit it-- I was had. They got me. I totally didn't expect it to play out like that.
So this is Angel's fantasy. Wesley and he are friends again. Cordelia chooses him to love. Connor loves and accepts him. He and Connor save the day together--him showing Connor what it's like to feel satisfaction in helping & protecting others. Wes and Gunn sort of become friends again. He and Cordelia make love at the end.
Maybe I might've been more aware that it was an illusion if I'd been watching this show in the previous three seasons. I would have been able to pick out character tell-tales.
But I didn't, and they got me. Though right at the end, when he and Cordy started with the kissing, I was getting suspicious. I was thinkin', "Ok, so he's not willing to lose his soul to save the world, but he is willing to lose it for nookie? Sense of priority a bit askew?"
I wonder... were the things like the sword and the writing on the monk invented purely for the illusion, or are they reflections of the real way to kill the beast? If they are real, the irony's pretty good-- Angel would remember them from the illusion, but of course Angelus wouldn't just give that information away.
I liked Connor fighting the Beast. I love the Beast's speaking voice. I can't figure his accent, but it sounds right bitchin'. Almost... aristocratic. I lurv it.
And I really lurv Wesley.
I liked the Angel/Cordelia love scene. I thought it was nicely & emotionally done, with pretty music. Oh god, I might actualy be turning into an Angel/Cordy shipper after this. Previously, I'd been more wishful thinking on the Faith/Angel idea... but now I'm likin' the A/C.
Also, these past few episodes I've realized something fairly good-- as long as Angel is not around Buffy, or--alternately-- isn't brooding overmuch, I like him. I like his sense of humor. I just totally absolutely hate him when he's on BtVS. I watched all the seasons 1-3 reruns on FX, and I thought he was ok, and Becoming was very sad, but mostly I wanted to smack him, and tell him to shut up, go away, and stop whining and stop hitting on sixteen-year-old girls. But on his own show, away from Sunnydale, I could like the guy. He does have a nice chest.
And did his face get instantly sexier when he turned into Angelus, or what? I think it was the smile. I haven't seen Angel do any full-faced grins lately enough to remember; they're quite attractive on DB.
And should DB win an award for best Evil Laugh, you think? Cause that laugh was just... wicked cool. Literally. Just that touch of whimsy, and delight and the real sense that he's back, he's evil, he knows it, and they're all mad fools for doing it because they don't really know what they've done, but he's going to have such fun making sure they do soon enough.
Side thought: With Buffy last time, I cheated and downloaded "Potential" early on Monday night. First time ever. Now I think I have teh solution to this-- I'll sim[ly spoil myself rotten on getting Angel episodes early, and then remain pure and chaste for watching Buffy. Since Buffy is the important fandom anyway, this works out nicely for me. It's like a compromise.
P.S. That evil laugh is so fucking cool. I'm gonna rewatch my clip again...
ETA: Ok, I rewatched it a FOURTH time, and I finally heard Angel say "Buffy". That satifies that confusion. What I'm pleased ot notice is that the soul/change is ALREADY happening when he says it, and it's more of an "Oh, shit, I've done this before with my last girlfriend" thing, saying Buffy's name as interjection. There was nothing B/A shippy about it. This whole episode, in fact, showed that from Angel's perspective at least, he's All!About!Cordy. Cordy made him lose his soul-- his secret dream of perfect happiness is now centered on Cordy's love & companionship, not Buffy's.
::looks around, grinning::...Oh, don't mind me. I'm just all bubbly about the non-B/A-ness of it all....::whistles casually::

On both shows (starting noticably from season 4 BtVS and simultaneously on s-1 AtS) there's been a nice expansion of demons-as-people, and demon characters that are human-like. In the early season of Buffy the only monsters that were allowed to have human-like personalities were vampires (humans-turned-monsters); both shows opening up on that was a wise story decision. But for all that the small characters are similar, the major characters on the shows don't talk to each other as much as they should. Someone could end the world on BtVS (like, say, I dunno... Willow!) and the LA gang would have died along with everyone else, totally unable to stop it. Because THEY DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS HAPPENING. Both groups take on the responsibility of "we're the last resort to saving the world", and yet they each only do half the work. If the two groups were in regular communication, the amount of information they'd have to research solutions would be doubled.
anyway, yeah. side rant there.
