Thanks [livejournal.com profile] kimberly_a, for pointing me to this article. Like you, I'm pleasantly surprised to see that Ebert is not only a good movie critic, but a good journalistic writer as well.

I'm Australian. We're a pretty secular country - although most of out nutty religious types do seem to end up in parliament! Still, anyone who suggested school prayer, or who inbited visitors to his office to get on their knees and pray, would be regarded as something of a loon, if not a subtle racist (or relgion-ist - there must be a better word than that, but sectarian doesn't seem right!).

racist is the wrong word-- I'd have to look it up to find the rihgt one though. Maybe just "judgmental fanatic"?
