All the cameras seemed permanently focused on Salma Hayek's breasts.

I'm surprised Chicago won over The Hours and The Pianist. Especially since LOTR was a better movie than Chicago, for all I enjoyed the latter.

I think it was a poor mark on the Acedemy to give Roman Polanski a personal award, or even to nominate him. The possibility of giving a collaberative work like a feature film the Best Picure award is one thing (and it seems like everyone agrees The Pianist was an amazing movie), but to give the man personally award is a mistake. And I wish he had shown up personally, so he could have gotten arrested.

I'm sad I missed Adrian Brody's acceptance speech. It sounds from everyone else like it was adorable.

I :heart: Michael Moore. Even though he was boo-ed off-stage by the same audience that clapped for his winning, and even though he took the opportunity to shamelessly spout his politics-- can you blame him?What better opportunity for attention-- I still think his movies kick ass and he deserved it.

I've not seen many of P's films that I'm aware of, and I hope it was clear from above that it wasn't the movie I had a problem with. A movie is made by hundreds to thousands of people, and is a collective work of art. But I don't think it's appropriate for the Academy, an American organization, to give an award to a person wanted for rape by the courts & police in America. Tasteless is the word.

Well his movies vary in quality from very good to very poor. He was much better before the whole Sharon Tate thing you know...

I am aware he is running form a statutory rape charge (don't have that crime here, there is in fact a whole seperate law giving rise to the less elegant charge of Intercourse with a girl under the age of 16 or Intercourse with a girl under the age of 14). I forget how old the girl was in Mr Polabkski's case.

Directors and producers always take all the credit for a given movie, I just always thought that was the way it was. And yeah the academy are tastless (and according to my Mother should be renamed the "klu klux Academy" after there startling relucantance to give Black actors Oscars. Shes not forgiven them just because of last year you know).

I think she was fifteen. Also, some of the laws on ages statutory rape might vary state to state... I doubt it, but I'm not absolutely certain. I do know that in California, if both people are under 18 and within two years of age, it's not outlawed. Any older though-- say one is 19 and one is 17, it is illegal. Again, I'm not sure what the bottom of that margin is; can a 14 year old have legal sex with a 12 year old? I couldn't say I knew. But that isn't brought up as much.

Technically, it's Ku Klux. As to the black actors being passed over-- I'd actually hold more blame for that against the Emmy awards and television rather than film. But in all places of media... progress is regrettably slow. Such is one of the many problems in the world.

Hi there. Am delurking to agree about the Roman Polanski situation. The girl was 13, from the articles I've read.

As an aside, it's so silly how the attendees just clap mindlessly, and stand up when everyone else does, etc. I love the awards but jeepers, it's like watching a group of people operated by a collective (lack of?) brain ;o) Michael Moore deserves an award for bravery. I was surprised he won, just because it was kinda obvious he'd say something controversial. Well deserved, though. Bowling For Colombine was very thought-provoking.

I personally want to see The Pianist, but agree that 'tasteless' is the word for the Polanski thing. The fact that he got a standing ovation in his absence is just wrong. Hello, he *fleed* the country. After having illegal sex with a *13* year old. Yeah, what a prince. Everyone on their feet!

I'm in lust with Queen Latifah also. Pregnant Catherine ZJ was just incredibly sexy. And talk about emphasising your good points! Holy heck was that cleavage! I may be imagining things but it seemed to me there were a lot more 'normal-sized' women at the awards. Not heaps or anything, but more. It was really niced, and they looked much better than some of the thinner ones (where did Nicole Kidman go?!?).

Anyway, enough from me. The awards just ended here, and the news brings back the rather harsh reality of life outside LA.

Me again ;o) Just saw this in an article re. Polanski:

Polanski's lawyers have begun negotiating with Los Angeles prosecutors to allow the now-64-year-old director back into the States without serving jail time.

Geimer [the girl he statutorily raped], who lives with her family in Hawaii, says it's fine with her. "I really wish this would be over, that he would reach agreement with the courts, no longer be a fugitive."

She also tells Inside Edition that she wouldn't call the episode rape, but the sex was not consensual. "I perceived it as he made me have sex with him," she says. "The word 'rape' always brings to mind for me a level of...violence that wasn't there."

Also, he apparently started a relationship with then 15yr old Natassja Kinski as soon as he feld the country.

Although it's still incredibly tasteless, I am at least relieved that the victim didn't sit, upset in her living room, watching as Polanski was given a standing ovation.
