I found out last weekend what the heck "five by five" means.

It's a radio term. When you measure clarity of transmission on a scale of 1-5, if you're coming in loud/clear you're coming in 5/5.

Hah. I feel all superior and "in-the-know"... but I had to share anwyay.

Oh!

I've been wondering about that for ages but was too embarrassed to ask!

Thank you! I always thought it sounded cool, but I never knew what it meant. And I´m afraid to use terms I don´t understand - they tend to backfire :).

To clarify:

It's like saying "loud and clear." The first number signifies the volume, the second five signifies the clarity. So, "five by one" would mean it's loud enough, but the static dominates the signal.

Of course, if you already knew that -- slap me and call me annoying.

I only knew what it meant cause a Friend of mine is a Radio Tech in the Navy. And the one time I asked him if he could hear me ok on a CB in our cars and he Answered "Five-by-Five" so I made him explain it to me =)

This big Faith fan on diaryland.com clued me in on the meaning a few months ago. She had links and everything--made me feel so special.

I saw that somewhere in an FAQ, but since I don't trust anything, it's good to have independent confirmation(s). And it does sound wicked cool. I should start saying it, in fact. Especially since I'm channeling Faith.

As someone else pointed, out, the first number indicates volume, the second indicates clarity. So, to be most specific, five by five means loud & clear. :)

Should start saying it too... it does sound kind of cool. And mysterious.
