Rashaka: Gone, GONNNNNNE! All gone. Whoosh---bye bye! Gone, gone....even dial-up! Lost, all lost...
SBfA: You know what this means, right? Get a job. And cheer up, it's Buffy night.
Rashaka: I can't cheer up. I have Women Studies this afternoon, with the freakishly cheerful teacher. I'm all full of unwanted cheer!
SBfA: Yeah, well, I don't exist. I can't have cheer at all.
Rashaka: Can whine about it though.
SBfA: Everyone can do that. Hey, good thoughts-- your bedroom is pretty! Wood floor now.
Rashaka: It makes loud noises when I drop things, and my feet get cold.
SBfA: Shut up and go to Linguistics.

Oh and why is the Women studies teacher so happy? Must of the feminist,/womens study lecturers I have met have all ben grumpy!

She's young, and thus, like new teachers in every subject, has yet to grow into a cynic. Actually, I just took the class now and I think I'd like to amend that to "eager" instead of cheerful. Eager and loud. But nah, she's not grumpy. Luckily I haven't had more than 1 grumpy teacher so far.

I found a preeeeettyyyy blue area rug at ALCO mart that I wish I'd gotten; it was only $20! Decorating is hard. I bow to interior designers.

I don't think not existed should get in the way of having angels, prophets etc. IF the the surpreme being of athesim wants 'em I say let him have them! Even if it dosn't exist...
Well I am glad you don't have any grumpy teahers, but I would beware the women studies one. The misgony of day to day life gets to them eventually!

Date: 2003-04-16 10:13 am (UTC)That's because the English language is sexist in it's form, based on a patriarchal society where any person of unnamed gender automaticaly becomes a "he", because obviously there are more men in the world than women so it's a natural default-- wait, there isn't, is there? So then it must be because more of the people who matter in the world are men-- at least, that's what we're taught when we learn grammatical English.
Whether your class agreed to acknowledge that no monotheistic gods were female/male or not, that conversation was just giving into the sexism stereotypes within our language and the traditions that further those stereotypes. Call your god It, or the royal 'We'.

Date: 2003-04-16 11:26 am (UTC)The argument of our class was that by avoiding the issue using words like "it" we actually highlight the sex issue more than if we just use "he" or "she". Refering to God as an "it" all the time sticks out (also makes me think of theTV remote control which is a bt disrespectful) like a sore thumb. Just using he or she, well that dosn't. The gender of God is not an issue so we didn't make it one. we just used an accepted term.
We're not givning in to sexism innate in the English language, because we understand the root of the word (beside Language can not be innately sexist, only neurolinguistics can make it so). So we not being sexist, since all our listeners are aware of the meaning of the term. Its just an accepted word. Like black folks using the "n" word (why they'd want to i do not know...but hey).it means something different when they say it to when a white middle class guy would say it. Just like the term "he" for God.
Also my brother, the Anthropologist has just told me that "He is not a gender specific term". not exactly sure what that means...
Besides, feminists have more important battles to fight than this. I know because I was broughtup by a mad feminist single mother, so i am as close to being a woman as a man can get!

Feh. I never thought you were gay by your opinions alone. But then, I haven't seen you face to face, and that's when you can usually guess with best accuracy. At least, for guys. I can never tell a gay woman from another woman.
