Spuffy fantasy fiction is evil.

I don't know why I get sucked in reading it. Most of it is terrible, and the best ones are only alright, or half-decent.

Even the ones with better writing style often have terrible plots.

It's horribly mushy. 9.5 tines our of 10 Spike is dramatically out of character. The saccahrine levels are so high I feel I need an insulin shot after reading it. And always, always, Spike is portrayed as the perfect boyfriend material who is drastically unnapreciated by Buffy (who is either dating Riley or Angel at the time) until she comes to her senses and a) jumps him, or b) asks him to the prom.

Ick.

And yet, I still read some of them.

Though, to be fair, Zarrah's new fic Blast from the Past does have good, hot smut. And it's not set in High School, which helps.

I was chatting with [livejournal.com profile] octopedingenue about about Spike in my previous post, and she linked this really great site that had the full text for the story "The Velveteen Rabbit", which I haven't read in YEARS, and I was delighted to skim over it again.

And this is still a wonderful excerpt:

"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real."

"Does it hurt?" asked the Velveteen Rabbit.

"Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt."

"Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?"

"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in your joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

"I suppose you are real?" said the Rabbit. And then he wished he had not said it, for he thought the Skin Horse might be sensitive. But the Skin Horse only smiled.

"The Boy's Uncle made me Real," he said. "That was a great many years ago; but once you are Real you can't become unreal again. It lasts for always."

I've been having weird eating habbits lately.

Of course, with the holidays I've had more candy, but I had only one slice of the two pies my mom made (I usually scarf on pie), and I've had only one serving of the last three half-gallons of ice cream we bought (which outlasted the pie).

I usually skip breakfast entirely. I have anything from a small snack to a good sized sandwhich for lunch, and this time I made myself eat a whoel sandwhich, but I felt like I didn't want to.

I eat half of what I used to for dinner.

I haven't mentioned it to anyone, because I feel like if I vocalize it that it'll change, and I'm not sure I'm unhappy with eating less. I'm not obese, or even fat, but I am bigger than I'd like by about 20 pounds.

I don't feel any skinnier though. I just feel like I'm eating less. I'll eat half of my meal, and suddenly I'm not hungry anymore.

The last time I did this it was after oral surgery, but once I got over that completely, I went back to my previous eating habbits.

I dunno. Does anyone else feel like this sometimes-- that for no reason they can pinpoint their appetite just takes a dramatic change? I mean, I'm not severely stressed by anything right now, so I don't think its psychosomatic... I dunno.

The SciFi channel movie "Dragon Fighter" is coming on in half an hour.

Despite the dumb name, I'm rather looking forward to it.

A. Dragons.

B. Dean Cain.

I have long missed the nights when I could drool at my cute-as-a-sex-button Superman.

It's nice to see him doing stuff, even if it is low-budget movies.

Cause, ya know, he's hot. And he's Superman. From Lois & Clark. And now he's going to fight dragons.

Hopefully the movie will be alright. And even if it isn't-- EYE CANDY!

Watched 1/2 hour of Dragon Fighter.

Had to get up and leave the room.

Dean Cain really needs a better job.

There was a glimmer of chracterization... Cain's character at least had the quirk of talking too much. But one rahter common quirk does not make a character, or a movie.

This is... terrible. Bad CG. Laughably bad script. I mean LAUGHABLY. We were giggling in disbelief.

I finally couldn't take it anymore, and had to leave.

Told my dad to call me back when there was some killing.

Edited to add: The killing, I'm afraid, is not helping this show at all. Right now I'm praying to the Supreme Being For Athiests that this is a movie, not a series. Cause I swear to Spike, if they cancelled FARSCAPE for something like this, then they're buck-fucking mad.
