Tohru: at first I was wary, but I got used to her English voice fast. I like it, though I don't think she is able to be quite as spastic as the Japanese voice actress can be, and we all know that Tohru is spastic. Like a spastic Jesus. ::winks at [livejournal.com profile] octopedingenue::

Yuki: at first I didn't like it at all. It seems to have the wrong pitch. But I got used to it and now I think it's decent. I did like him in the culture festival episode where he crossdresses.

Shigure: I loved his English voice all the way up until episode 6, which I hated it. Then I liked it again in episode 7.

Kyo: this one took the longest to get adjusted to, but now I think it's the most fitting voice casting of the main characters besides Hana & Uo & Akito. Maybe not as deep as the Japanese version, but has the perfect level of bratty jerk.

Hana & Uo: I have no complaints whatsoever. Good job.

Momiji: Was his japanese voice a female voice? Because it just sounds weird here. But I imagine I'll adjust.

Hatori: Hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate. I don't even know if I want to try watching his flashback episode because I hate his English voice so much.

Akito: Good job. He is properly creepy and has the right pitch and tone and everything.

General comments

I like the translation in almost everything except the Kyo/Tohru moments. They really changed two major scenes (Kyo picking up Tohru in the woods, and Kyo walking Tohru home from her relative's house) from what the conversations were the fansubs/manga, to be more friendshippy-oriented, and less personal and intimate and romantically suggestive. And they even kinda changed the Kyo dialogue of the scene where he and Tohru talk about the fruit on the back of the onigiri as a metaphor for jealousy.

I find this odd and disappointing.

But I am going through phases of loving the dub. It's like watching the show for the first time all over again.

Now when is my DeepDiscount DVD going to arrive?!

Have I mentioned that I just *love* the English versions of the opening and closing songs for Fruits Basket? Love love love love love.
Love love love love love. I love them as much as I hate Hatori's English voice.
How is it that they got the singer to match the Japanese singer so perfectly? :sigh: Me is happy.

Okay, I officially like or love everything about Fruits Basket dubbed except Hatori. Lame lame lame. Like listening to a book on tape. Lame.

But the episode itself is a very good one. The beginnings of the tragic history and dark underbelly of the Sohma family.

Also, I never noticed before but Hatori waking up naked under Tohru's coat and asking "Did you see it?" has outrageous porn-parody possibilities.

::scratching head in puzzlement::

Um, ok, maybe I need to bring out my fansubs to check this but I was under the impression that Haru had a crush on Yuki and was acting all possesive and slashy about him-- whatever, but there were serious unrequited slashy vibes on Haru's part. And now I'm watching the DVD version and that seems to not be part of the dialogue or the subtitles. Did I just completely read it wrong the first time?

::fishes around for fansubs::

EDIT: I was right! I was so right.

FanSubbed version: "Today I'll finally make you mine."
DVD version: "I'm coming for you next!"

See, see!

I knew it. Damn. That's a bit of unnecessary editing. And in the subtitles, too. Which is practically like lying or something. Mistranslating. Lying!

::skips forward in new manga volume 3 purchased this afternoon::

See, see! They even have it all slashy and stuff in the English version of the manga! So why not the DVD? It's not like it's playing on any tv stations any time soon.

EDIT#2: Well, at least they included slashy stuff in the rest of the episode. It would kind of hard to edit it out, but even so I'm glad they didn't. Haru's crush is cute, as is Yuki's annoyance by it, and Tohru's reaction.

Also, I forgot to say it before, but I like Haru's English voice too. Well cast.
