It's like Jane Austin anime.
May. 13th, 2005 01:26 am::in the middle of episode 2 of Victorian Romance Emma::
This anime is very liesurely paced, and no one's died yet, and no one's able to magically change their appearance or turn iron into gold, and no one carries a sword, and no one's so much as yelled at each other yet....there hasn't even been a fist fight. Much less blood & guts, action, political intrigue, or people turning into ducks.
You know why I like this anime?
I don't know either. But I do. In fact, I kinda sorta love it.
I'm going to need to find episodes 4 and on soon...
EDIT: it could be the fact that two months ago I actually got to go ballroom dancing in costume (I used my senior prom dress) with other people in costume and a live band. In an old theater with a large, old-style ballroom.
And it's weird but, if you get a bunch of guys who've all been taught to ballroom dance and put them in tuxes and put them in a room with a live band, you do get asked to dance no matter what you look like, and it is fun. It's really, really fun. And swirly. And pretty.
Note: Fast polka waltzing with someone who knows what they're doing? FUNNEST. THING. EVER. ...YOU TWIRL. A LOT.

Emma episode 3
May. 13th, 2005 02:03 amThis anime is so cute and so amusing and so understated...and I'm starting to really love it. Gah! Why does Animeu.com only have up to episode 3?!!
EDIT: ...add to that subtle and surprisingly funny. Especially with the well-placed awkward scenes where someone does something just slightly too forward and all the characters get all Victorian and proper about it. I don't know if it's supposed to be funny, but it is. I love it.
I can't dislike Prince Hakim for taking an interest in Emma (even though William is her true cross-class OTP!), because the things he likes about her are basically the exact same things William likes about her. No wonder they're friends.
I'm amused that this episode is an almost exact reversal of the previous episode.
And I love Emma's mistress, with her well-placed stares that convey everything she has to say on the subject, or any subject for that matter.

May. 13th, 2005 03:10 amThe Adult Swim forums, usually a pit of horror that happens to contain a few really cool people amongst the thousands of retards (which I visit nonetheless, because I am a masochist), went against its nature today as someone actually offered up the best reason I've seen ANYWHERE for why Mugen and Spike Spiegel are not the same character:
"Can you even imagine Spike ever wearing red? Can you see Mugen in anything else?"
"Can you even imagine Spike ever wearing red? Can you see Mugen in anything else?"
Last night while trying to fall asleep I made a list in my head of my "most OTP OTPs"... i.e. the pairings I'm most emotionally invested in, and the ones I think are "even more meant for each other than your normal OTP." Televison and anime/manga. In order of true-est.
P.S.: I typed for two hours to write this stuff. It's like a mega-essay. So please, comment! Squee with me or disagree, I don't care. :) Let me know what you think. What your most-OTP OTPs are.
( Anime (big spoilers for Princess Tutu, Escaflowne, Fruits Basket, and Gundam Wing, mild spoilers for Sailor Moon, and Ranma 1/2 )
( Television (spoilers for Buffy, Farscape, The X Files )
What did you learn from this meme?
That just as often as Shaka's ships have happy endings, the other half of them ends in tragedy or bittersweet departure. I guess I come from the Casablanca / Gone With The Wind school of romance.
*CURSE THE BEE! THE DAMN BEE!
