I was reading Spin magazine today at the grocery store (which I weirdly visited 3 times in less than 12 hours), and a lengthy article on The Dashboard Confessionals labeled them an "emo" band. What is emo, as a music genre?

I'm pretty sure it means "emotional." Which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Isn't all music emotional?

Here's (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=CASS80306142258&sql=C4525) a little explanation about it.

I would have thought so. Thanks for the link.

You know, that talks a lot but doesn't actually say anything specific. It sort of assumes some pre-knowledge on my part that is very absent.

Hah, yeah. Of course I didn't notice that until *after* posted my comment. ;) Helps a little bit though.

emo is sort of a sub-genre/offshoot of contemporary punk. usually, the bands involved sing about depressing things. that's an oversimplification but...

if a punkish band guy sings lots of songs about the girl who dumped him and how sad he is, he is generally lumped into the category of "emo."

a lot of punks dis emo since they consider it "whiney." it's often a bit poppier than much other punk stuff.

emo is basically more focused on emotion than on anger or politics.

some sorta emo bands i can think of are:

-cursive
-dashboard confessional
-and you will know us by the trail of the dead
-jimmy eat world
-mineral
-bright eyes

does that help at all?

It does, thank you. Would you say Third Eye Blind qualifies as emo? What about Three Doors Down? Or the Goo Goo Dolls?

I know you didn't ask me, but um no. Their music is not influenced in any way by hardcore/punk music from the late 70's/early 80's. At heart that's where emo comes from, IMO some of their style of music was stolen from new wave as well.

It's all Rancid and NOFX fault really, without them there would be no Good Charlotte and New found Glory. The worst freaking emo bands ever, their songs are just so grating to listen to. But then again I shouldn't talk, I listen to heavy metal, which most people find off putting and headache inducing.

Well, I wouldn't say that Newfound Glory or Good Charlotte sound much at all like Dashboard Confessionals-- they're less moody. I guess I'll have to research this whole topic more.

I know you're on vacation but I read this entry this morning and then came across comic strip and it pertains to the subject at hand...it's kinda' funny anyway. Especially if you like a genre of music, etc and can laugh at yourself.

back now!

Huh. Well, it's not terribly funny (not my kind of humor), but I'm glad you linked it. Another little piece to the puzzle...

it's all very confusing, actually. i don't think even the bands know.
