Got 3 new Cowboy Bebop icons thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kenzier... who just introduced herself to me on LJ as a fellow lover of Spike/Buffy, Vach/Meryl, and Faye/Spike. So I investigated said journal, and while she has less than 5 entries up, one is a huge post with about 100 icons of above said pairings, and another is the wallpaper currently on my comp. And this icon ::points up and to the left:: just amused me.

So, welcome to LJ [livejournal.com profile] kenzier. And go watch this Bebop vid, because it's crazy frelling awesome and I have to rec it to people.

Hey. Just recently finished the 30th chapter of Leadbelly. Spent a whole day doing nothing but reading the two fics. Thanks for pointing it out. But now I've gotta wait for the next chapter to be posted. ::sighs:: I think the coolest thing about it is the Ed characterization. Damn impressive. I mean, the author not only managed to get inside her crazy head, but also provided her with a convincing bit of angst. ::goes off to check out vid::

CHapter 31 came out the day before yesterday! It's great. I'm on a tension/angst/love/drama high from that fic. I'm glad you liked them. I sort of consider it to be all one fic, and it's one of the best fanfics I've read.

Gaaah. I know. One of my favorite chapters was the chapter where Ed tells Faye that she needs to find a place to belong and be happy. For a chapter that had a lot of humorous lines from Ed's thoughts, it was also incredibly moving. Ed's angst and her frustration with the heightened tension among the crew members, and her desire for everything to be good... its very convincing. One of the reasons the fic stands out so much to me is that although Spike and Faye are the focus of the plot, Jet and Ed's characterization is... it's like they're behaving as they would in such a situation, as opposed to being used within the story just to push things along. They're not there to be a plot device... they're there to be themselves. Even her original characters, like the actor that Faye stays with near the latter chapters of Leadbelly... even they are well-developed and convincing.

I'm totally convinced, by the way, that Spike is Ezekiel reborn. I know Sci-Fi isn't really a part of the Bebop verse except for a little bit of psychic behavior, but... I'm just so very sure of it. I think it's one of those things that the audience is supposed to understand and pick up on that the characters do not.

The vid is awesome. Makes me want to watch it again, just thi

Thanks for letting me know about Ch 31! I hadn't checked back yet and didn't know til you told me. I'm going to read it when I get the chance.

That's one of my favorite chapters, too. I think my jaw dropped when Ed lost it, saying everyone always leaves, and her mind was like a scream. That's just so believable and accurate within that show. Because Ed's such a positive, happy kid, you forget about what great potential for sadness she could be feeling. I like how the author let you know--believably so--that Ed is not oblivious to others' pain or to her own. It made it so much more real for me.

I adored Jet's and Ed's characterizations for the same reason you did. You could tell the author wasn't just a fan of the show, but that she loved all the characters, not just Spike and Faye. She put such care into developing their feelings and making it real for the reader.

About Spike being Ezekiel reborn: this is gonna sound like I'm making this up, but I was thinking the same thing. You could say there's a little bit of supernatural element to CB. For instance, the episodes that feature the shaman character. There's been a few little things here and there both in the movie and other episodes. So I think a little of that would be plausible in fic.

oooh... chapter 32 is up now too! she updated quickly for once. And oh, is it painful. Think of the BtVS ep Beneath Me. It's that kind of pain, all around.

So at least for us, it's agreed: Spike is Ezekiel. ::nods satisfactorally::

The sad thing about it all is that we are watching the innocent relationship of F/Ez, and at the same time watching the very harsh relationship of F/S... both relationships are equally deep, but so different in their outcome.

Gaaaaa. I'm happy to finally have someone to talk to about this fic. This is my new mental canon, ya know.

Just read Ch 32. Thanks for letting me know it was up. I loved, loved the part where Faye says that Spike doesn't get to give her permission to treat him like shit. That he didn't allow her the same courtesy when he treated her like shit. That was so...dead-on. Go Faye.

The theme in this fic seems to be that every one of the main characters is so beaten down by the fact that everyone in their lives keeps leaving. Each of the characters keeps denying that they care, even though they really, really do. And their greatest fear is that the people in their lives will leave again. I keep thinking of Jet, and how he keeps trying to keep the family together, even while denying that he cares, but they all keep making a mess of everything. And then there's Ed trying to keep the family together in her own way. Faye denies she needs this family (not just Spike), even though she keeps returning. And Spike...well, Spike keeps fighting any semblance of family, as does Ezekiel (although Ez apparently only has Faye). It's really heartbreaking.

And yet, he keeps letting it slip through his fingers and you are on the edge of your seat going "Oh here's your chance, come on, say that you care! Don't fuck it up this time this is what you really want you just don't quite realize it!"

It's really heartbreaking.

Yeah, it is. And how about the fact that Faye assualted Spike, instead of the other way around? After I read this chapter I had to go back and read the last few in light of this new information. It was heartbreakingly awful, and now we're down to where it really seems like these two have done absolutely everything they possibly can to each other, and there's nothing left to do but help each other heal. Hopefully. If things go well. This could still legitimately be a tragedy. ::bites lip::

Yeah, it's so agonizing to watch him keep fucking up. I keep thinking "come on Spike, don't be an ass this time!" ::g::

I'm kind of confused, though, I have to admit. Does this mean that Faye wasn't raped at all? That the semen found on her when she came to was from her coming after Spike? Maybe I'm confused bc I left too big a gap of time before reading this chapter after reading the previous.

It was the other way around. Though it's not technically rape (no penetration), she basically assalted him, jacking him off when he kept telling her no. And he let her because he didn't want to hurt her again and at this point he showed up to put himself at her mercy anyway and beg forgiveness, so he let her take her anger out on him even though he didn't want it. The semen was because he came in her hands, and it hit her clothes I guess. The torn clothes was from Faye's own actions and their rather physical (though essentially non-violent) argument.

So, nope. He didn't. She did. I had to go back and reread the chapter before it that takes place in the hospital and police station, to confirm the situation given the content of the flashback. It seemed they had already both forgiven each other by the end there. But because of the situation, the secretive nature of their complicated relationship, and people's gender percetions, everyone made assumptions about the aftermath and they tossed Spike in the slammer.
