What kind of file ends with .ax ?

I downloaded Read or Die, and it came in .mkv files.

So I downloaded the software for playing .mkv files.

And that is made of of .ax files. Like MatroskaSplitter.ax.

What the hell do i need now? Damn, I just wanted to watch anime before I went to class this mornin... Why must it be so hard?

I have parts of Fruits Basket in .mkv. The basic advantage is that you can easily switch between Japanese and English audio without ending up with a large file. The bad news is, the codec messes up Windows Media Player. Once I'd installed Matroska, I couldn't play .wmv files anymores. So, whenever I need to watch .mkv, I install Matroska, then uninstall immediately afterwards. You might want to do the same if you use WMP.

Oh yeah: If you can't install .ax files, I have the Matroska codec in an exe file. Want me to upload it for you?

You need Matroska codec its a different kind of coding from mpeg etc.

You can get the codec here...http://packs.matroska.org/

Ive heard that MKV encode is supposed to be of higher quality than mpeg etc, but it's also the least user friendly. Most people experience issues after installing.
