For some reason, most of the suicide fics I see in the FB section of Fruits Basket focuse on Kyo.

This mystifies me... cause if I had to peg one of them for suicide, I'd have pegged Yuki hands down.

4 Tohru

...

Tohru. Committing suicide. TOHRU. Tohru HONDA. Tohru "Gosh it's great living in a tent after my mom died! Wheee!" Honda. THAT Tohru.

WHY ARE WE ON OPPOSITE PLANET?

Tohru "Gosh it's great living in a tent after my mom died! Wheee!" Honda.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

WHY ARE WE ON OPPOSITE PLANET?

Something like that. It's the typical OOC "Oh no, Yuki/Kyo/whoever won't love me, I must suicide" thing, and then there was one where she got raped by Akito (THAT is definitely a subgenre, and one I find very hard to believe as possible... if he went really out of control psycho I think Akito would be more likely to beat her to death not rape her) and then tried to commit suicide for the shame. And another one I think Kyo died or something and she commited suicide.

::gags::: So unreal. She's a Vash type of person. Suicide to her is probably the WORST thing one can do and solves nothing.

Tohru would never, ever kill herself PERIOD just because one specific person didn't love her. It's hard enough *narrowing her love DOWN* to one specific person enough to suggest a selfishly personal/romantic involvement with that person, because her love is that selfless, unconditional, and universal.

Icon: "Tohru Honda: She's like Jesus, in a way."

and then there was one where she got raped by Akito (THAT is definitely a subgenre, and one I find very hard to believe as possible... if he went really out of control psycho I think Akito would be more likely to beat her to death not rape her) and then tried to commit suicide for the shame.

I wouldn't put it past Akito to rape Tohru or anybody, since he already seems fond of sexualized violence. But I agree that he'd be more likely to kill her outright if he went totally out of control with rage, and while he might use rape as a form of calculated terrorism/humiliation/punishment, he's more likely to torture her psychologically.

(I can't believe the actual serious thought I just gave that... *facepalm*)

And insert grim snarl here at another example of the engrained sexism of the idea that a woman who has been raped is HORRIBLY DEFILED and must consider herself (and kill herself!) as such.

And another one I think Kyo died or something and she commited suicide.

If Tohru were going to kill herself over the death of anyone, it would be for her mom, which didn't--and wouldn't--happen. If Kyou or whoever died, at most we'd be treated to the bizarre spectacle of Tohru talking to TWO framed pictures and treating them like actual people instead of just one. (Tohru taking the plastic-wrapped picture of her mom into the hotspring with her and asking "Mom" how it felt = very cute. SO SO SO SO CREEPY.)

::gags:: She's a Vash type of person. Suicide to her is probably the WORST thing one can do and solves nothing.

EXACTLY. DUDE. The whole point of the anime (well, one of 'em) is all the Sohmas goin', "Woe, our lives suck and are not worth living," and Tohru goin', "Excuse me, I'm very sad that your lives suck, but everything is still hunky-dory for you in comparison because you are ALIVE. ALIVE ALIVE ALIVE. Unlike my beloved dead mother, who is DEAD. And did not want to die. And is never coming back. And is DEAD DEAD DEAD. Which is BAD." There was even that whole bit with Ritsu in episode 23 (so sad!) of Ritsu saying, "I'm going to kill myself because my existence is a burden on the rest of the world!" and Tohru saying, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Tohru: Yuki, could you keep something in your room for me?
Yuki: Why are you giving me your picture of Kyo?
Tohru: Because I have to get dressed, and, well, he's a boy and all...

My first thought exactly. Dude, Tohru is incapable of depression. She just is. As far as Yuki vs. Kyo, I can't really see either of them committing suicide. But if somebody's going to, well...it seems like Kyo takes his problems out on the world rather than on himself. I agree that Yuki would be more likely to do it, just because he's the opposite; he blames himself for everything. He's like Hatori, in a way. Now THERE'S somebody to watch out for.

::laugh:: Weird but kinda funny in an ooky way.

He's like Hatori, in a way. Now THERE'S somebody to watch out for.

That's true... he does seem more likely of the Sohmas...but I'd say I thinks he's in the been-there-done-that stage by the time Tohru meets him. He's past the point in his life where he might have been suicidal, and is in the stage of "coping" and "being adult about it" right now.

I wonder though... when I think about it, I wonder if the curse and Akito might hold the Sohmas (the inner circle of cursed ones) back from suicide. Not necessarily something overt like a rule, but as part of the servitude to their god they would not necessarily be inclined to deprive him of his subjects. Like it's just NOT something they would consider at all in the first place because his right to their lives is that strong.

On the other hand, they're all VERY cursed which is a pretty strong argument to suicide, if you have to have one. There's "Oh, I'm really depressed." and then there's "Oh, I have been literally suffering under a curse my whole life and am doomed to never be really free or happy cause the Powers That Be have it out for my whole bloodline."

Lucky for the Sohmas, apparently God and all His angelsThe Powers That Be have decided to take pity on them (albeit in a cantakerously roundabout fashion) by sending Jesus ChristTohru Honda to heeeeal them with Herher looooove!

I'm a good little United Methodist, I am...
