Date: 2004-11-15 09:11 pm (UTC)When was that, precisely? I'm slowly but surely buying the volumes as they came out, but if I knew the point at which they really start to differ I might jump ahead and read the scantalations from that point, to kill time until I can buy it.
And don't even get me started on FMA. They just shuffled everything into a hat for that one.
Plotwise, yeah, it differs greatly, but I don't agree that it's a bad thing. The manga is not always better. Personally I've only read the beginning of the FMA manga, and that seemed relatively close to me, and I didn't think it was better or worse than the anime. But I know you've only been reading the summaries for the episodes-- I have to tell you that having seen the whole thing myself and loving it as much as I do, I am skeptical about your opinion because of the fact that you have never actually watched the episodes except the last one.
But mostly I don't really get into the anime v. manga department in general, because I tend not to care. I like both mediums and I don't believe in the idea that the whichever one came first is the "true" one-- if a manga is made into an anime, that anime is a creature of its own, made by diffrent people. The LotR book was created by Tolkein, but no one's going to argue that the LOTR movie isn't Peter Jackson's baby. The opposite is true too. You have to look at them separately. It doesn't matter if something follows the first incarnation directly as long as its good and as long as the writers don't promise you otherwise. I don't go into anime or manga expecting a series to be totally loyal to its source. I just care if I like it or not.
